This social walk will explore Winscar Reservoir, South Nab and Snailsden Pike, offering fine views, visiting 3 trig. points, 2 Ethels and with a little historical interest along the way. We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day in the outdoors!

You are invited to a peer-led social walk, hosted by BMC Peak Area volunteers, with local BMC volunteer Peter Judd guiding the route.

Walk Grading: Moderate

Distance: Approx. 17 km (10.5 miles)

Ascent: 380 m (1,250 ft)

Duration: Approximately 6 hours

Time: Sunday 3rd August, 08:50 am for a 09:00 am start

Location: Broad Hill car park, east shore of Winscar Reservoir, Dunford Bridge, South Yorkshire, S36 4TF

Parking: The start point, Yorkshire Water’s Broad Hill car park (off Dunford Rd), is the best option (with 40 spaces) but fills up quickly at weekends so arriving early is very strongly recommended. There are two more, smaller car parks, one south-east of the reservoir in Dunford Bridge itself and the other due south of the reservoir just of the Windle Edge road (if used then make your way to the Broad Hill car park to find the rest of the party

Facilities: Toilets are not available at the car park

Public Transport: While nearby Dunford Bridge is served by buses these are infrequent, so using public transport may prove difficult, however travel information is available here - Plan Your Journey | Traveline

What to Bring

We’ll cover a range of terrains, so please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear:

Footwear: Sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good grip. On wet day you may value gaiters, if have use them

Clothing: Dress in layers, including waterproofs, as conditions can vary; bring a hat and gloves for cooler areas, a sun hat and sunscreen on hotter days

Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s walk; there will be no places to purchase refreshments en route.

A small first aid kit with any personal medication, painkillers and blister plasters

Although we plan to finish within daylight hours, carrying a small torch or head torch is advisable for emergencies. If you have and use them, you may appreciate bringing your trekking poles

Who Can Attend

This walk is open to BMC members, accompanying friends and anyone who has an interest in the work of the BMC. Under 18s are welcome but strictly only if in the company of a parent or legal guardian who will remain with them and take responsibility for them throughout

Dogs are NOT permitted on this walk (we love dogs, but this route uses some Open Access land where the landowner has exercised their right to exclude all except guide, hearing or assistance dogs)

Health Precautions: If you have any health conditions that might impact your participation, please inform us in advance. Carry any required medications and let the walk leader know if assistance may be needed in accessing or using them. Covid-19: Please do not attend if you feel unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms
