This social walk will climb to the top of Helm Crag, with an optional visit to the actual highest point.

You are invited to join a peer-led walk, hosted and led by BMC Lake District Area volunteers, Ken Taylor and Liz Jolley. We will return by the same route. Tea and cakes will be available at The Gather after the walk. We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day in the outdoors!

A meeting for the Lakes Area of the BMC will be held afterwards. This will include a Q&A session with the new CEO of the Lake District National Park Authority (Gavin Capstick). You are welcome to stay on at The Gather for the meeting, which will start at around 6.30pm. There will also be a briefing by BMC Hill Walking Co-ordinator, Josh Harris about the BMC’s work for Hill Walking.

Walk Grading: Easy to Moderate

Distance: Approx. 6.5 km (4 miles)

Ascent: 320 m (1,000 ft)

Duration: Approximately 3 hours

Facilities: Toilets are available at the car parks

Public Transport: Stagecoach 555 runs every 30 minutes between Lancaster and Keswick, via Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere. Stagecoach 599 runs between Bowness and Grasmere, a frequent service

What to Bring

We’ll cover a range of terrains, so please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear

Footwear: Sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good grip

Clothing: Dress in layers, including a warm layer and waterproofs, as conditions can vary; bring a hat and gloves for cooler areas

Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s hike; there will be no places to purchase refreshments en route

Other Essentials: Although we plan to finish within daylight hours, carrying a small torch or head torch is advisable for emergencies. A camera to capture the views could be a nice idea and bring sunscreen if it’s going to be a hot sunny day

Who Can Attend

Over 18's. Well behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept under close control at all times, please indicate on your booking if you will be bringing a dog

Health Precautions: If you have any health conditions that might impact your participation, please inform us in advance. Carry any required medications, and let the walk leader know if assistance may be needed in accessing them

Covid-19: Please do not attend if you feel unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms
