The GB Climbing team made a statement in the Boulder qualifications rounds at the IFSC World Championships, with all seven athletes securing places in the semi-finals.

It’s a standout results for the British team, underlining their growing presence on the international stage and setting up for a promising weekend of competition ahead.

MEN’S QUALIFICATION

Competing in Group A, Toby Roberts placed second place with a score of 84.9, flashing Boulder 2 and 5. He topped Boulder one – a technical, delicate slab - on his second attempt, one of only two athletes to do so. Japan’s Sorato Anraku led the qualification round with 94.9 points.

Speaking after the round, Roberts said:

“I had a really good round and I think the highlight would have been the slab – I was really having to fight on that, I managed to get a nice crimp on the volume to be honest I don’t really know how I stuck the last move I sort of just went and hoped and found myself at the top.

“The rest of the round was quite a tricky round, but I managed to keep my head and get three tops at the end which put me in second position in my group. I’m really psyched especially after a disappointing round in Lead yesterday where I didn’t make the semi-finals.”

Also in Group A, Jack MacDougall – who placed 16th at the 2023 World Championships in Bern delivered a strong qualification round. He flashed Boulder 1 and toped Boulder 3 on his second attempt.

Speaking after his round, MacDougall said:

“I loved Boulder 3 it was my favourite, I’d been going okay and new I was in a good place I got to the top of this boulder and it was super hard, super bicep-y. I managed to top it and I’m really glad that I managed to keep going til I was matched on the top holds because it felt unlikely.”

MacDougall finished third in his heat, tied with France’s Sam Avezou, both scoring 79.8 points.

In Group B, Dayan Akhtar and Hamish competed in a tightly contested heat, each topping Boulder 2 and 5. Their scores were separated by just 0.1 points.
