The BMC's Premium Partner, Cotswold Outdoor, has once again shown a hugely generous level of support to The Climate Project from the BMC's Access & Conservation Trust, by sending staff to plant sphagnum moss in the Peak District.

Seven members of the Cotswold Outdoor staff team enjoyed a rare working day outside the office as they joined the BMC to plant sphagnum this March, which forms part of The Climate Project from the BMC's Access & Conservation Trust.

The Climate Project currently supports two carbon-locking projects: planting sphagnum to restore the Peak District moorland with Moors for the Future and researching and harvesting and planting seagrass in North Wales. Both of these plants sequester carbon at a greater rate than tropical rainforest, as well as preserving vital habitats for flora and fauna.

As the BMC's Premium Partner, Cotswold Outdoor have long been supporters of the BMC's Access & Conservation Trust, two years ago donating over £35,000 to the charity's Mend Our Mountains cause from their Pennies campaign which ran from April to June 2023.

This year, Cotswold Outdoor have chosen to support a different campaign from the BMC's Access & Conservation Trust - The Climate Project, a collection of nature-based solutions and resources to help combat the climate crisis. From now until the end of June 2025 as well as getting the 15% off discount, BMC members can round up gear payments at the till with Pennies, and the proceeds will go to The Climate Project.

The Cotswold Outdoor staff are proud to work for a company so invested in giving back to nature and people who enjoy spending time in the mountains.

While out planting sphagnum in the Upper Goyt Valley, Peak District, Cotswold Outdoor Social Media Manager, Matt Hardy, said, "Working for Cotswold Outdoor, what binds us all together is that we all love spending time outdoors, and day to day we're in the office, helping people find the right kit and find their way outdoors, but we don't as often get to do this during our work time. It's a beautiful day in the Peak District and I couldn't think of a better thing to be doing.

"Planting sphagnum is super, easy. You get your sphagnum plug, make a small hole with what I now know is called a dibber, pop the plug in with the roots pointing downwards, pat it down like you do in gardening, it couldn't be easier! We very quickly planted four rolls of 20 sphagnum plugs which is brilliant."

As climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers, we are all fully invested in the health of our outdoor spaces and aware that human-induced climate change and habitat destruction needs to be urgently addressed by all, from the individual to the corporation. Here's your chance to give an unnoticeable amount that will make a big difference to two of this campaign's projects - planting sphagnum to restore the Peak District moorland and researching, harvesting and planting seagrass in North Wales. Both of these plants sequester carbon at a greater rate than tropical rainforest, as well as preserving vital habitats for flora and fauna.

So treating yourself to that new bit of kit this summer has never been for such a good cause! Don't forget to take your BMC membership details along to your nearest Cotswold Outdoor store for your 15% off. Then simply press, 'YES' on the card reader to round up your payment in Cotswold Outdoor right now to donate a small amount with ease to The Climate Project.
