Shap Fells Social Walk | 12th September
Explore Shap Fells, the Lake District's hidden gem
Far removed from the busy central fells, this journey across the Shap Fells ventures into the broad, open expanses of the Far Eastern Fells
You are invited to join a social hill walk exploring one of the Lake District’s most overlooked and quietly rewarding landscapes. Far removed from the busy central fells, this journey across the Shap Fells ventures into the broad, open expanses of the Far Eastern Fells — a landscape of rolling summits, big skies and deep solitude that feels increasingly rare in modern Lakeland.
The route links the lesser-visited tops of Tarn Crag (664m), Grey Crag (638m) and Harrop Pike (637m), offering a rewarding wander through remote terrain where the emphasis is less on dramatic crags and more on atmosphere, openness and a genuine sense of exploration. While sections follow established tracks and paths, much of the day involves travelling away from obvious lines across pathless ground, requiring confidence in uneven terrain and an appreciation for quieter, wilder country.
Along the way we’ll explore the character of the “forgotten” Far Eastern Fells — a subtle but deeply evocative landscape shaped by isolation, fell farming and the quiet beauty of the Lakeland fringe. Highlights include expansive views stretching from Morecambe Bay to the Pennines, as well as a visit to Sleddale Hall, famously known as Uncle Monty’s country cottage in Withnail and I.
Ideal for walkers looking to escape the crowded Lakeland classics, this walk offers a different perspective on the Lake District: quieter hills, expansive horizons and a memorable day immersed in one of the National Park’s most underrated corners.
We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day in the outdoors!
