The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) joined a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Outdoor Recreation & Access to Nature, the APPG for Swimming and APPG for Sport & Physical Recreation to launch Reconomics 3.0 at a meeting in Westminster, on Monday 26 January.

The Reconomics 3.0 report was commissioned by the members of the Sport and Recreation Alliance's Water Recreation and Outdoor Pursuits divisions and has been produced in partnership with Leeds Beckett University. The findings in the report clearly demonstrate that outdoor recreation is a major economic driver, particularly in rural areas, and vital for mental and physical health, community connection and environmental awareness.

The headline findings from Reconomics 3.0 include:

  1. 34 million people use outdoor recreation as part of their blend of activities, including 1.9 million children (3.1 million more people than were participating 10 years ago).
  2. Outdoor recreation is increasingly diverse – on average, there has been 22% growth in participation across ethnic minority groups, compared to 10 years ago.
  3. 1 million jobs are generated by outdoor recreation, with the total value to the UK economy sitting at £22 billion.
  4. Outdoor recreation has a huge social value, worth £46.8 billion, and produces savings to the NHS of over £5 billion.

You can view the summary of the Reconomics 3.0 report here, and the full report is available here.

The launch of the report on Monday was attended by many Parliamentarians including Baroness Hayman, Minister at the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and several outdoor organisations including the BMC, Paddle UK, Ramblers, British Horse Society and Open Spaces Society.

Dr Catherine Flitcroft, Head of Access & Environment said:

“Together with the recent APPG report, Outdoors For All: Recommendations for Government on Access to Nature, Reconomics makes a compelling case for the importance of outdoor recreation to so many sectors including public health, environmental sustainability, and local communities.  The evidence in these reports are powerful lobbying tools and strengthen our desire for Government to prioritise better access to nature and outdoor recreation. “

Andy MacNae, Chair of the Outdoor Recreation & Access to Nature APPG, called it a "truly vital piece of evidence" that makes an "irrefutable case: supporting outdoor recreation is not a luxury, but a strategic investment in our nation’s future."

He said the clear messages from the report concerning the significant economic contribution, and billions in healthcare savings, means "We must prioritise access to nature and active outdoor pursuits."

Following the successful Reconomics (2014) and Reconomics Plus (2017) reports, it is hoped Reconomics 3.0 will similarly inform government policy.
