The BMC Land & Property Trust - the charity responsible for the BMC's land and property assets - is seeking a new Chair and up to four Trustees to join its Board. There are also opportunities to join our Land Management Group. These voluntary roles present a unique opportunity to help oversee the management of some of the UK's most important climbing and hill walking sites.

Since 1979, the BMC has acquired eight key climbing sites across England and Wales, representing sport, trad and bouldering venues. Formal ownership is currently split between the BMC Land & Property Trust (LPT), BMC Land Holdings Ltd, and the BMC centrally.

BMC-owned sites include:

Landownership and management are central to the BMC’s work. Responsibilities are shared between the LPT and the Land Management Group (LMG) – a team of expert volunteers from backgrounds such as geotechnical engineering, law, and environmental management.

Landownership and management is an important aspect of the BMC's work and responsibilities are split between the LPT, and the Land Management Group (LMG) add link which comprises volunteers with backgrounds in geotechnical engineering, law and environmental management. Day-to-day site operations are managed by a part time Land & Property Contractor (100 days per year), operating under the guidance of LPT and LMG, plus additional support staff providing core office services. Please note that these responsibilities do not extend to the BMC head office, or to owned / managed huts.

Current opportunities

Following a period of internal review there are opportunities for several new people to get involved (see role descriptions here). To help address imbalances across the BMC, applications are particularly encouraged from those based in Wales, from females and from other under-represented groups.

  • Land & Property Trust (LPT) is recruiting a Chair and up to four trustees and invites applications from suitably experienced individuals. LPT is responsible for the overall management of BMC owned and managed sites. It was incorporated in 2005 and earlier this year adopted a new constitution and Operating Agreement defining its’ purpose and relationship with the BMC. Applications are invited from those backgrounds in land & property management, law, fundraising, finance, governance or the environmental sector. Direct knowledge of BMC sites and climbing more generally will also be beneficial.

  • Land Management Group (LMG) is a more practical / hands on body which supports day-to-day site management issues. It is seeking several new members with experience in woodland / habitat management, the quarry industry, crag development (fixed equipment), health & safety or broader environmental policy. Direct knowledge of BMC sites and involvement in climbing will be a distinct advantage. LMG typically meets twice per year, either virtually or as part of site-based meetings.

Considerations for applicants

For positions other than the LPT chair, time commitment will be relatively modest though this will depend on the enthusiasm of individual applicants. Two online or face to face meetings per year will be typical plus follow-up emails between meetings. Further work will be needed to consolidate the BMC's property portfolio under a single entity and fully establish its’ financial relationship with the BMC; this will involve the chair working closely with senior BMC staff and board members. A likely scenario is that once new trustees are in place, an acting chair will be appointed from the new board.

In the case of LMG, applicants with particular specialist knowledge (e.g. woodland / habitat management, H&S, fixed equipment etc) should expect to be called on for advice and sense checking between meetings in both reactive and proactive situations.

Please note that these are all voluntary / unpaid positions. Travel and accommodation expenses are payable. Applicants need not be BMC members at the time of application.
