The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) can announce that Sara Javid has been appointed the new Chair for the Hill Walking Group Committee.

Sara brings experience in strategic leadership, partnership working and improving access to health and wellbeing at a national level.  She cares about creating the right conditions for people to thrive, and see’s this role as a natural extension of that commitment – ensuring hill walking remains safe, inclusive and representative of the diverse communities who find joy and purpose in the outdoors.

Sara is committed to enabling a strong, collaborative committee that works confidently and transparently on behalf of hill walkers across the UK.  In her role, she will champion the voices of our members, strengthen our external relationships and focus on the priorities that matter most to safeguarding and growing hill walking for the future.

On her appointment, Sara said:

“It is a privilege to accept the role of Chair of the Hill Walking Group Committee.  Hill walking has shaped so much of who I am – it has given me confidence, community, and a lasting sense of connection to the landscapes that define this country.  To now having the opportunity to help steward and strengthen the future of hill walking on behalf of the BMC and its members is an honour I take on with genuine pride and responsibility.”

David Matthews, the BMC's National Elected Councillor for Hill Walking, said:

“Sara is a very experienced public health professional with a diversity of interests and connections – she is committed to the growth and success of Hill Walking in the BMC and broader and more diverse representation."

Josh Harris, the BMC's Hill Walking Co-ordinator, said:

“Having worked with Sara over the past few months I am positive she will make a huge difference to hill walking bringing energy, professionalism, and fun as we embark on our 2030 strategy.  I would also like to take this opportunity to thank David Matthews (Nationally Elected Councillor for Hill Walking) who stepped forward 12 months ago when the Hill Walking Group were left without a Chair.  David has brought a renewed sense of purpose to the group and has appointed 6 new committee members, along with the new chair in his time as Interim Chair."
