Erin McNeice and Iggy Rinaldi shared top spot in women’s qualification at the British Lead Championships in Manchester, while Sam Butterworth and Isaac Sutton matched each other to head the men’s standings.

Qualification took place on Saturday 21 February at Big Depot in Manchester, with the top 25 women and 26 men advancing to Sunday’s semi-finals.

WOMEN’S QUALIFICATION

Returning British champion McNeice and senior debutant Rinaldi both topped the two qualification routes to finish joint first. Rinaldi is competing in her first season at senior level, while McNeice adds another commanding performance to her domestic record.

Molly Thompson-Smith marked her return to competition after a break in 2025 by qualifying third, topping Route 1 and reaching hold 36 on Route 2.

Following her round, Molly said:

“13 years ago if you told me I'd be the oldest athlete here at 28, I would of laughed in your face. On one hand it's really cool because there's this new generation coming through and like the depth in GB's climbing pool is incredible [...] it's nice to just like be really present and be here because I want to be here and because I want to see where I stack up against the rest of the brits and just be around this energy and like see the youth climbing still involved ”

MEN’S QUALIFICATION

Sam Butterworth and Isaac Sutton could not be separated at the top of the men’s field, each recording a top on Route 1 and 33+ on Route 2.

Rhys Conlon qualified third, claiming the only other top of the round on Route 1 and reaching hold 30 on Route 2.

Jim Pope, competing for the first time since the Olympic Qualifying Series in 2024, finished seventh to secure his place in the semi-finals.

After his qualification round, Jim said:

“It's really nice to be back competing again. This is the first time I've competed since the OQS in 2024, and it's really nice to kind of of come back just because I really wanted to do it, rather than it being for the pressure of selection or to make the team or anything, I just missed competing and wanted to be here."

The top 26 men advance to Sunday’s next round.
