Apply to become a Host at the 2026 BMC International Summer Meet between the 13 - 20 June 2026.

The BMC is inviting experienced UK climbers to apply as hosts for the 2026 International Summer Meet in North Wales.

This week-long event brings climbers from across the world together for 8 days of trad climbing, cultural exchange, and community-building. Hosts play a central role in making the meet safe, welcoming, and memorable.

As a host, you’ll be paired with visiting climbers and help them experience the very best of North Wales trad climbing, from mountain crags to sea cliffs and everything in between.

Dates: 13–20 June 2026

What we’re looking for:

Hosts must have strong experience of climbing in North Wales and be confident, safe multi-pitch trad leaders.
This includes mountain crags, quarried rock, and sea cliffs.

We do not require a specific grade.
Instead, we are looking for sound judgement, competence on multi-pitch trad terrain, and the ability to look after an international visitor in a variety of North Wales settings.

Minimum Requirements

  • Good knowledge of North Wales venues (weather patterns, approaches, descent routes, local ethics)

  • Ability to build multi-point equalised anchors

  • Competence placing and assessing trad protection

  • Confident ropework skills, including:

    • Tie in securely and check partners’ tie-in.

    • Belaying with double ropes with safe brake hand technique

    • Tie in securely to an anchor using a suitable knot (e.g. clove hitch)

    • Abseiling (single & double rope, self-protected)

    • Tying off a belay plate (releasable under load)

    • Ascending a rope if required

    • Leaders must place trad gear and build multi-point equalised anchors

    • Remove and collect protection from a route while climbing as a second

  • Ability to communicate clearly using standard climbing calls (Safe, Off Belay, Take In, On Belay, Climbing Now, OK)

  • Willingness to act as a safe, respectful representative of the BMC and UK climbing community

  • Must be a BMC member

Hosts should be comfortable supporting a range of participant abilities, from solid seconders to experienced leaders from other climbing cultures.

We encourage hosts from a wide range of ability levels.
The event is about safe, enjoyable climbing and cultural exchange not difficulty or performance.

What will I do as a host?

  • Partner with international climbers throughout the week

  • Introduce guests to North Wales climbing safely and responsibly

  • Share knowledge of local ethics, RAD access guidance, and environmental considerations

  • Support the smooth running of the meet (daily check-ins, venue planning etc.)

  • Uphold the BMC Participation Statement and UIAA principles on responsible climbing

Equipment expectations

Hosts must bring a full personal trad rack and standard personal climbing equipment. This typically includes:

  • Nuts & cams
  • Quickdraws
  • Locking carabiners
  • Extendable slings
  • Double climbing ropes – 50m preferred
  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Climbing shoes
  • Belay device for twin ropes,
  • Personal sling (120cm),
  • Nut key
  • Two friction hitch loops
  • Whistle

Environmental & conduct responsibilities

All hosts must follow:

BMC Participation Statement

The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking, and mountaineering involve inherent risks of personal injury or death. Participants should accept responsibility for their own actions and involvement.

UIAA 2024 Declaration on Hiking, Climbing & Mountaineering

Ethical behaviour, environmental respect, community focus.

Key expectations

  • Strict adherence to bird-nesting restrictions and RAD access notes

  • No littering: pack out all waste

  • Respect for the local community, accommodation providers, and fellow participants

  • Ensure safety and enjoyment for everyone

  • Avoid multiple teams on a route where unsafe or inconsiderate

Apply to be a host

We welcome applications from experienced climbers who want to share their knowledge of North Wales, meet international climbers, and support a fantastic week of culturally diverse trad climbing.

Deadline: 28 February 2026
