The Board of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) today announces that Interim Chair of the Board, John Willmott, will step down from his position as Senior Independent Director on 30 May 2025.

John has served on the Board as an Independent Director (and latterly Senior Independent Director) for the past two and a half years and has decided that now is the right time to step down as the organisation enters its 2025 – 2030 strategic period.

He took on the role of Interim Chair in December 2024 and has provided valuable stability during a transitional phase, culminating in the successful recruitment of a new chair, Catherine Hawkins. Catherine will begin her term as Chair of the Board of Directors in June 2025.

Paul Ratcliffe, BMC Chief Executive Officer, said:

“On behalf of everyone at the BMC, I want to thank John for his dedication, leadership and steady guidance over the past two and a half years. His contribution as Director and more recently Interim Chair has been instrumental in helping us navigate a period of significant change. As we move forward into our 2025 – 2030 strategy, we do so with a strong foundation”

The BMC will now begin the recruitment process to appoint a successor as independent director.
