Catherine Hawkins to step down as BMC Chair

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) today announces that Chair of the Board, Catherine Hawkins, will step down from her position in July 2025.
Appointed earlier this year, Catherine has decided she cannot dedicate the time necessary to fulfil the role of Chair alongside her other commitments.
Following Catherine's formal departure in July, the BMC intends to appoint Hanne Doherty, Independent Director, as Interim Chair. The Board of Directors will work with the Nominations Committee to formalise Hanne’s proposed new role.
Upon her resignation, Catherine said:
"Whilst I regret that my increasing professional commitments no longer allow me to dedicate the time required as Chair, I wish the BMC every success in the future as it continues its vital work supporting climbers, mountaineers, hill walkers, and conservation."
Paul Ratcliffe, BMC CEO, said:
“We thank Catherine for her contribution as Chair and are saddened that she has decided to not continue with the organisation.
With Hanne intending to take over the position, having already played a vital role shaping our 2025-2030 strategy, we feel confident about the BMC’s future, built on the foundation of a strong and experienced Board.”
Hanne has served on the Board as an Independent Director since June 2024. She brings extensive experience across the sports media, marketing and broadcast landscape, and has played a key role in helping the BMC successfully navigate a period of significant change.
As a keen hillwalker, enthusiastic sport climber and aspiring mountaineer, Hanne has enjoyed playing a role in the future of these activities through her work with the BMC. Her contributions are underpinned by her belief that the outdoors has a huge role to play in community wellbeing.
Hanne Doherty, BMC Independent Director, said:
“It would be an honour to step into the role of Interim Chair, I'm grateful for Catherine’s openness and candour, and I wish her every success in her future endeavours.
I am committed to supporting our continued progress, leading the recruitment of a permanent Chair, and working towards delivering the new strategy alongside our Senior Leadership Team.”
The BMC will begin the recruitment process to appoint a new Chair immediately with a view to filling the position by the end of 2025.
