Moors for the Future Partnership have been featured on the latest episode of Countryfile, raising awareness of wildfire risk and damage to the moorlands the BMC's Access & Conservation Trust have been helping them to restore in our longterm partnership.

The BMC's Access & Conservation Trust (ACT) has been a longterm supporter of Moors for the Future Partnership, having raised £90,000 for the Goyt Valley and Roaches restoration project in the Peak District which then unlocked £2.5 million in additional funding. A third of this area has now been damaged by the latest wildfires and ACT are currently working on our next big fundraising drive for the charity, including new, educational signage around wildfire risk in specifically targeted areas.

As part of the Mend Our Mountains and The Climate Project campaigns from ACT, BMC volunteers have been planting sphagnum moss for Moors for the Future Partnership since 2023 during Get Stuck In days. This year they planted 23,320 plugs over two days, bringing our grand total to 55,845 over the last two years. From April onwards, planting stops so as not to disturb ground-nesting birds, like lapwings and curlews.

The episode is on the BBC iPlayer here, and the wildfire segment starts at 15 min 30 secs in.

Further sphagnum moss planting opportunities will be arranged for later in the year here in the autumn for more dates.

Fancy helping out in the meantime? Get Stuck In is still going strong throughout the summer months with fantastic footpath repair projects in Eryri and the Lake District. Check for events here.

Planting sphagnum moss in the Peak District with Moors for the Future helps:

  • Avoid carbon loss
  • Increase water quality
  • Reduce wildfire risk
  • Reduce flooding risk
  • Protect endangered wildlife
  • Increase biodiversity
Wildfires have devastating effects on the carbon-sequestering peatlands, wildlife and their habitats, and they cost the UK economy £12billion annually
