The BMC Access & Conservation Trust have donated four heavy duty cargo nets to Fix the Fells, the Lake District path repair organisation, which will enable their staff and volunteers to move large stones much more easily during path work. This includes BMC volunteers on Get Stuck In path repair events, part of the trust's Mend Our Mountains campaign.

Fix the Fells do incredible work to repair and maintain mountain paths in the Lake District, combating erosion caused by increasingly heavy footfall and climate change. They rely on public donations and partner funding to continue their essential work in the places we love to walk and climb in.

The nets were handed over to Volunteer Development Ranger Matt Tweed by Get Stuck In Volunteer Leader Roy Hammond during a sphagnum moss planting day in the Peak District where both were volunteering their time to help restore the moorland.

A longtime BMC Get Stuck In volunteer and volunteer leader, Roy knows first hand that these cargo nets will come in very handy. He says, "Even what you'd think of as a smallish stepping stone or path stone can be extremely heavy, so with two, three or sometimes even four people, grabbing the edge of the cargo net, you can quickly transport large rocks to where they need to go."

Matt adds, "The nets that the BMC Access & Conservation Trust have kindly supplied to us are invaluable for helping us to do path repairs in the Lake District because they allow us to move stones across the fellside safely, so we can use the right stone from the right place. We need specific stones to make the path and we don’t want to go rummaging around scree slopes where there can be rare habitats that we might disturb. Nets help us to get stone from appropriate places and move safely into position to do the path repairs. This in turn helps create a resilient surface on the path which is resistant to erosion.”

Volunteer on a Get Stuck In event!

We have two upcoming days in February 2026 to plant sphagnum moss in the Peak District, helping to restore the Eastern Moors peat bog, devastated by wildfire last May. Then our three-day Get Stuck In events commence in Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Lake District from April onwards. Will you join us?

Volunteer

Fancy fixing footpaths in the Lake District, placing stepping stones in Eryri or planting sphagnum in the Peak District? Sign up to one of our Get Stuck In events here. And if you can't volunteer, why not gift us the amount you would have spent in fuel or on a train fare getting to a volunteer event?

Leave a legacy

A wise person once said, the most noble thing you can do is to "plant trees under whose shade you will never sit" and, likewise, fund path repair projects on which you will never walk and moorland restoration projects which you will never see. If you'd like to make a lasting impact on the landscape long after you've left this world, please consider leaving us a legacy.
