The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) has today confirmed an initial three-year partnership with Derbyshire-based aftercare pioneers, Grangers, designed to help adventure enthusiasts extend the life of their gear – whatever the British weather throws at it.

Built on a shared passion for the outdoors and a deep respect for the environments climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers depend on, the partnership represents a further step forward in helping to deliver the BMC’s Climate and Sustainability Action Plan as well as empowering people to get outside and to stay outside for longer through the promotion of garment restoration and long-term kit performance.

As the UK outdoor community prepares for the busy spring and summer seasons, the collaboration will equip the BMC’s 81,000 members with expert knowledge and practical solutions to maintain and restore their technical apparel and footwear. By helping members care for the equipment they already own, the partnership will directly reduce waste, lower carbon emissions linked to manufacturing and support the BMC’s ambition to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2040.

As the first Official Aftercare Partner of the BMC, Grangers brings nearly 90 years of British manufacturing heritage to the organisation. Their formulations are bluesign approved, PFAS-free and biodegradable, and are housed in 100% Prevented Ocean Plastic bottles, ensuring that climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers can maintain their performance gear without impacting the sensitive upland ecosystems they explore. This work supports the BMC’s wider mission to protect the landscapes of England and Wales, ensuring they remain accessible for future generations.

Lee Kenny, Head of Commercial at the BMC, said:

“By partnering with Grangers, we are encouraging our members to restore their kit and not replace it. This isn’t just about kit maintenance; it’s about a shift towards more sustainable habits that support the BMC’s 2040 Net Zero target while ensuring our equipment performs in the changeable British weather conditions and the mountains around the world.”

Natasha Barwell-Jones, Director of Marketing and Communications at Grangers, said:

“We are proud to announce our new partnership with The BMC. This partnership enables the two organisations to work together to educate and equip The BMC members and wider community to stay outdoors, whatever the weather, whilst extending the life of their clothing, footwear and equipment, in the most eco-responsible way possible. Minimising impact and enhancing time spent outside.”

The partnership will be activated across the BMC’s digital platforms and at National events throughout the year, offering members expert guidance on sustainable kit care.
