Olympic gold medallist Toby Roberts has been awarded an MBE for services to sport climbing, recognising his historic achievements and impact on the sport in the UK.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Roberts became the first British climber to win an Olympic medal, taking gold in the combined Boulder and Lead event and delivering a landmark moment for British climbing on the world stage.

On being awarded an MBE, Roberts shared:

"It definitely feels surreal to have received an MBE. Climbing has given me so much purpose and drive my whole life and it feels incredible to know that I have helped get people psyched about the sport. I can’t wait to continue to push myself further and keep enjoying it to its fullest.”

Raised in Surrey, Toby began climbing at a young age and progressed through grassroots clubs and the GB Climbing pathway. His early promise translated into international success, including Britain’s first IFSC Lead World Cup medal in 28 years and multiple World Cup victories across bouldering and lead.

In 2023, he became the first British male climber to qualify for the Olympic Games, before going on to secure Team GB’s first Olympic climbing gold in Paris.

Dr Laura Needham, Head of Performance for GB Climbing, said:

"Toby’s MBE is a truly deserved recognition of his unwavering commitment and professionalism. His performances have pushed the standard of the sport, but what sets Toby apart is his humility, work ethic and the example he sets for every young climber coming through our pathway. We’re incredibly proud of everything he has achieved so far, and this honour reflects not only his talent but the dedication he brings every single day."

The award recognises not only an exceptional sporting achievement, but Roberts’ wider contribution to the growth and visibility of climbing in the UK, inspiring participation and helping shape the future of the sport.
