Darren Johnson Appointed Chair of BMC Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee

Today, the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) can announce that Darren Johnson has been appointed the new Chair for the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee (EDI).
Darren brings more than 30 years of experience championing inclusive policy and governance across the public and charitable sectors. A committed advocate for equity in the outdoors, Darren has led national initiatives to tackle barriers to access and create more welcoming spaces for all.
A lifelong outdoor enthusiast and BMC member since 2007, Darren has served as Chair of the Midlands Area since Autumn 2023. He brings both professional expertise and lived experience to his new role, with a personal understanding of the cultural and practical barriers that prevent many from accessing the outdoors, and a strong commitment to dismantling them.
As Chair, Darren will support the Committee in advising the BMC Board and Executive on inclusion-related priorities, working to ensure that all perspectives are reflected in policy and practice.
On his appointment, Darren said:
"I’m delighted to take on the role of Chair of the BMC’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. I’m committed to listening to voices from across the BMC and the wider outdoor community. Diversity strengthens us all, and I’ll work to ensure those diverse voices are heard and help shape all that we do. As an avid walker, I’m not just here to talk the talk on EDI - I’m here to walk the walk, with the same passion and commitment I bring to every mountain I climb.”
Dominic Oughton, President of the BMC, said:
"I am delighted to welcome Darren into chairing our EDI Committee. I have worked closely with Darren over the past 12 months in his role as Midlands Area Chair and have come to value his enthusiasm, energy and insights. Darren’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment as we embark on our 2030 Strategy, with our commitment to making our activities open to all as the central theme.”
This appointment aligns with the BMC’s wider commitment to ensuring that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are inclusive for all, with recognition of background, age and ability, for the benefit of health, enjoyment and achievement
