BMC renames Young Volunteer Award in honour of Jessica Baker

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) has announced that its Young Volunteer of the Year Award will now be named in memory of Jessica Baker - a talented young climber and dedicated volunteer who made a significant impact in her community before her death in 2023, aged just 15.
Jessica was actively involved in coaching, mentoring, and supporting other climbers at both local and national events. Known for her quiet leadership and willingness to help others, she was respected by peers, coaches, and teachers alike.
Established in 2018, the Young Volunteer of the Year Award recognises young people under 27 who have made a meaningful voluntary contribution to the BMC’s work in climbing, hill walking, or mountaineering. By renaming the award, the BMC aims to reflect Jessica’s values and her commitment to supporting others.
Danielle Griffith, a climbing coach who worked closely with Jess, reflected:
“Jess had a natural ability to connect with people, making them feel seen, supported, and inspired. Despite her youth, she became a pillar of strength and encouragement for so many in her community. Her empathy shone through in every interaction.”
“Whether helping first-time climbers find their footing, offering coaching advice, or simply sharing a laugh to ease competition nerves, Jessica’s instinct was always to uplift others.”
Her contribution wasn’t limited to the climbing wall. Teachers at Jessica’s school described her as committed, courageous, and full of integrity - a role model both in and out of school.
Michelle Hordern, the BMC’s Volunteer Co-ordinator said:
“I met Jessica during the Youth Climbing Series, a keen young person who not only competed over the weekend but also volunteered her support and encouraged others to get involved. She left a lasting impression on me in such a short time. I feel it is fitting that this award is named in her honour. I believe she would have been a worthy recipient.”
Dominic Oughton, President of the BMC, said:
"Volunteers are the lifeblood of the BMC and I've been especially delighted by the number of young people who manage to make time in their busy lives to contribute as a part of our community, whether that's in access activities, supporting competitions or in our university clubs. The contributions Jessica made through volunteering is a shining illustration of this, so it is a fitting tribute to remember her in renaming our annual youth volunteer award."
