At the end of this summer, the BMC's Access & Conservation Trust donated 10 pairs of safety boots to Fix the Fells which will be free to borrow by volunteer path workers.

BMC Hill Walking Rep and BMC Access & Conservation Trust trustee, Steve Charles, says, "It was great to handover 10 pairs of safety boots from myself and BMC member Anne Salisbury to Rhiannon Green, Fix the Fells ranger, and Andy Clifford, Fix the Fells volunteer, at the Get Stuck In event that took place in Wasdale this week.

"Safety boots with steel toe caps must be used when involved in stonework on the paths, like making stepping stones and stop-pitched steps. These boots will be available free for volunteers to borrow in order to carry out path repair, maintenance and conservation work with Fix the Fells. This is part of the BMC Access & Conservation Trust's Mend Our Mountains campaign - helping to support the great work that Fix the Fells do with volunteer groups throughout the Lake District, including the BMC's Get Stuck In teams."

Matt Tweed, Fix the Fells Volunteer Development Ranger, says, “Fix the Fells is so grateful to everyone who donates through the BMC to support our work. Our close working relationship meant that a shortfall in our volunteer boot supply, which is so vital to facilitate volunteer groups getting involved in our work, was quickly addressed. In total, £320 worth of new steel toe capped boots were brought along to the recent Get Stuck In event on Scafell Pike, ensuring that enough of these essential pieces of kit are now available to provide for our incredible visiting groups for the foreseeable, helping us to keep looking after the beautiful Lake District landscape.”

Fix the Fells are always in need of more kit for volunteers as path work takes its toll on the most hardwearing of mountain clothing. Matt says, "As well as more boots, we need volunteer waterproofs in particular, and other PPE such as work gloves." Every little helps! Will you Get Stuck In?

Get Stuck In events are single and multi-day volunteer events in the Peak District, Lake District and North Wales. Hill walking fitness and experience, plus a packed lunch is required, but durable waterproofs and steel-toe-capped boots can be borrowed. On the multi-day events like this, volunteers do two days hard labour with the National Trust rangers on the footpaths of Eryri (Snowdonia) or the Lake District, while the third day is reserved for a rewarding group hike, climb or pub/cafe outing. You stay free of charge for three nights in basic, bunkhouse-style accommodation and there is a communal meal one evening. Single day events in the Peak District involve planting sphagnum moss and clearing invasive species.

Get Stuck In events are funded by the BMC's Access & Conservation Trust as part of the Mend Our Mountains campaign. Please give generously here and check out the latest volunteering opportunities here.

Get Stuck In footpath repair events

Get Stuck In events are 1-3 day opportunities for BMC volunteers to give some love back to the landscapes we love to walk and climb in. There are a range of activities decided on nearer the time of the event according to the National Trust rangers who will be teaching you new skills, explaining more about their footpath repair and conservation activities and working alongside you.
