It’s Time To Find Your Adventure

To help you find your next adventure, we’ve put together a series of tips and advice. From getting started, ideas about what to do, how to find people to do it with and what to expect along the way, the BMC will guide you through.

Every adventure starts with the first step, and the great news is that once you get going on your hiking, camping, bouldering and climbing, or even mountaineering journey, there’s a whole world and a lifetime’s worth of crags, mountains, ridges and trails to explore!

What’s In It For You?

Whether you’ve just had your first taste of adventure or you’ve been getting out there for years, you don’t need us to convince you that adventuring in wild places is amazing. Imagine watching the sun set from the top of a sea cliff after a day’s climbing, the view from the summit of a mountain you’ve worked hard to reach, or making your morning coffee in the first rays of sunlight at a secluded camp spot.

Not only do adventures bring incredible experiences, but they improve our mental and physical health. Being surrounded by nature, focusing on the moves of a boulder problem, or walking in wide open moorland help us live in the moment and provide an escape from screens, scrolling and the stresses of every day life.

Whether you’ve climbed a new route, ticked off a summit or completed your longest hike so far, adventures bring a real sense of achievement. No one starts out as an expert, and it’s normal to learn skills and build up confidence along the way. Map reading, trip planning and learning to use climbing ropes safely are all opportunities to gain skills that translate into the next adventure, as well as useful talents in other areas of life.

Adventures can help you get fit, too. Getting out and about on a walk, learning to climb and carrying gear makes you strong without visiting the gym once. You can do that too of course, if you want to!

How Clubs Can Help

All this sounds amazing, but where to start or how to progress to the next level? A club could be the answer. It’s a way for like-minded people to share their adventures, with regular get togethers close to home and further afield. If you’re nervous about going along, don’t worry – clubs are set up to welcome new members. You don’t have to commit to joining straight away, so you can try a few different clubs and activities until you find the one that’s right for you.

Clubs are made up of members with a wealth of knowledge, so you can benefit from years spent finding the best spots to climb and the best routes to walk. If you’re starting out, you might not have all the kit or even know what you need. Clubs are a chance to learn from other members, and most even have kit you can try out before you get your own. Equally, if you’ve lived through a few epics and got the hard-earned knowledge, there will be others who are keen to learn from your experience! Clubs are also the very best place to meet future buddies who are up for exactly the same kind of adventures as you.

Tell Your Friends

While solo adventures can be fun, most adventures are better shared! There’s something special about sitting down with old and new friends to recap the events of the day. Over time, these are the people who’ll be there to give you a leg up, catch you when you fall, share the heavy load and celebrate with when you achieve your goals.

Know a friend who might want an adventure too? Share this link with them!
