Peak District Social Walk, Hayfield | 20th March
This social walk will follow the river out of the village then up through woodland to the Hayfield 'Dragon's Back' and over the Ethels of Mount Famine, South Head, Brown Knoll and Kinder Low before descending through Tunstead Farm back to Hayfield. The walk will cover some steep ascents and descents.
You are invited to join a peer-led social walk, hosted by BMC Peak District Area Volunteer, Paul Justin. We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day in the outdoors!

Distance: Approx. 14.5 km (9 miles)
Ascent: 480 m (1,565 ft)
Duration: Approximately 6 hours

Public Transport: The start point is serviced by the 358 bus from Stockport, which has a stop close to New Mills central station on the Manchester – Sheffield line
The 61 bus, Buxton to Glossop also stops nest to the start point
Facilities: Toilets are available at the car park. Hayfield provides shops, cafes and pubs
What to Bring
We’ll cover a range of terrains, so please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear
Footwear: Sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good grip
Clothing: Dress in layers, including a warm layer and waterproofs, as conditions can vary; bring a hat and gloves
Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s walk
Other Essentials: Although we plan to finish within daylight hours, carrying a small torch or head torch is advisable for emergencies
Who Can Attend
Anyone, although this walk is not permitted for U18's. Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead due to lambing season. Please indicate on your booking if you will be bringing a dog.
Health Precautions: If you have any health conditions that might impact your participation, please inform us in advance. Carry any required medications, and let the walk leader know if assistance may be needed in accessing them.
Covid-19: Please do not attend if you feel unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms.

Mend Our Mountains Articles
The dramatic skyline of the Great Ridge walk connects the summits of Lose Hill and Mam Tor in Derbyshire’s Hope Valley. Heavy footfall left the path in a badly eroded state and work to repair the damage to the path started in March this year, and has seen 500 metres of the most serious damage along the path repaired to protect the surrounding landscape and bordering habitat.
