The BMC Winter Open Youth Event, featuring separate bouldering and leading competitions, took place over the weekend of 7 and 8 December 2013 in Sheffield.
The events were open to young climbers born between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 2002
Bouldering Competition
The boulder competition was held on the Saturday at The Climbing Works in Sheffield.
The event was the first round of the Junior British Bouldering Championships (JBBCs) 2014 and also a selection event for the 2014 GB Junior Bouldering Team. So there was a lot to play for.
With 180 young people taking part in the competition, plus all their families and supporters, there was a great atmosphere at the Climbing Works.
The young people themselves climbed fantastically.
Bouldering competitions are relatively recent events for children of these ages and it is already clear that standards are progressively cranking up.

Lead Climbing Competition
The lead climbing competition was held on the Sunday at the Foundry Climbing Centre in Sheffield.
The competition was also a selection event for the 2014 GB Junior Lead Climbing Team.
130 young people took part in this competition and like the bouldering competiton the previous day, numbers are up significantly on last year as are the standards that the young people are attaining.
The Foundry was crammed and spectators were treated to some amazing displays of skill and determination from the climbers.
