The BMC is sad to announce the passing of long-time member, activist and raconteur of the climbing scene, Bernard Newman.

Born in Birmingham in 1950, Newman was a skilled climber and was also an accomplished photographer, writer, and editor. Principled, at times provocative and deeply rooted in traditional climbing values, he became known for his anti-bolt editorials during his time as editor for the renowned Mountain magazine in the early 1990s.

While reading Geology at the University of Leeds in the 1970s, Bernard became a key figure in the Leeds climbing scene and was the enthusiastic editor of the mountaineering club's journal.

In 1987, Newman collaborated with Ken Wilson to produce Extreme Rock – the bible for a generation of climbers, and part of Wilson's iconic Classic, Hard, and Extreme Rock series.

Nick Colton, a friend of Bernard and BMC Safeguarding Officer, fondly recalls their shared adventures, skateboarding through the streets of Leeds and honing their skills climbing buildings.

As a member of the Alpine Club, Climbers’ Club and the Fell & Rock Climbing Club (FRCC), Bernard was an active climber up until the weeks before his death. His legacy will be remembered throughout the climbing community as a great photographer, and influential writer and publisher.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Janine. The BMC extends our thoughts and sincere condolences at this difficult time.

There will be gathering to remember and celebrate Bernard's life held at The Grouse Inn, Oldfield (BD22 0RX) on March 18 2024 starting at 12:30pm.
