Organisational review final report: out now

The final report from the BMC Organisational Review Group (ORG) was published this morning and has now been formally handed over to the BMC to determine the next steps.

Over the last nine months the ORG has put enormous time, effort and thought – literally 1,000s of voluntary hours – into the range of recommendations it suggests are necessary to modernise and improve the operation of the BMC for the future.

The recommendations will now go to the BMC National Council and Area Meetings to work out how to proceed from here. The BMC AGM originally planned for 28 April will now take place on 16 June (Castle Green Hotel, Kendal) to enable discussion at the April Area meetings.

The final report includes some significant amendments compared to the original document, including:

Greater recognition for the role of clubs within the BMC;
A revised board structure with improved member representation;
More member representation on the Nominations Committee;
Greater clarity on organisational structure (ref: structure chart, p 17);
Clarification on the promotion of growth and participation in climbing & hill walking; and
A firm recommendation to set up a subsidiary for competition climbing and the GB Team.

As greatly as this is appreciated I would note the following statement in the summary:

In general, it was felt that policy discussions needed to reach and engage more members, have a broader
decision making base, and that decisions should be made and communicated transparently.

With which I would identify entirely - for the majority of members, communication and inclusion are the primary concern with membership simplification a quick second. (I for example am member of two BMC climbing clubs and an individual member for insurance purposes - daft).

However, of the '51' recommendations only the following: 4,15-19, 31 & 39 involved communication to the members, a total of 8 of the recommendations; and in nearly all these cases it is just that - to the members. There is still the lack of understanding that as a membership organization it should be actually engaging and listening to its members as they are the experts on climbing, mountaineering and hillwalking... (whilst I am sure that the members of the board will be fabulous, they are not the majority)

This work has been outstanding, but there is a seed change needed in the thinking. The BMC should uphold its outstanding traditional values, not be stuck in the past like a member of the English Gentry.

(and just my tuppence worth in relation to this: the 'make a million' campaign is embarrassing. Members weren't consulted and by framing the outstanding efforts of the previous campaign in terms of 'amount of money' rather than 'quality of work', it makes a sham of the whole idea)
