Montane becomes BMC’s new recommended clothing and pack partner

Posted by Alex Messenger on 16/10/2017

An exciting new partnership with Montane will support our vital access, conservation, safety and youth work, by giving financial support at a time when government funding for sport is being reduced by recent changes to Sport England funding.

British brand Montane specialises in engineering innovative and intelligently designed lightweight, breathable clothing and equipment specifically for climbers, hill walkers and trail runners, and has done so for nearly 25 years.

This exciting new partnership enables Montane to support our vital access, conservation, safety and youth work, by giving financial support at a time when government funding for sport is being reduced by recent changes to Sport England funding.

The partnership with Montane is part of a wider BMC strategy to work with new commercial partners to bridge this funding gap. Montane is our second strategic partner, and follows on from Cotswold Outdoor and Snow+Rock becoming the BMC’s recommended retail partners this August.

Jake Doxat, Managing Director of Montane says:

“We are excited to be selected as the recommended clothing and pack partner of the BMC. This partnership not only gives Montane a strong platform through which to engage with the British climbing and hill walking communities, but also allows us to play a role in the active support of vital grassroots work undertaken by the BMC to ensure the continued rights of access and conservation of our much-loved outdoor spaces as well as encouraging young people to challenge themselves in the outdoors.”

Dave Turnbull, BMC CEO added:

“We’re excited to welcome Montane on board as our recommended clothing and pack partner. Montane is an independent British brand with an established reputation. Their involvement not only enables the BMC to address a funding gap, but sees us gain an enthusiastic, relevant and innovative partner with a strong interest in climbing and hill walking across the UK. We look forward to working with them”.

How to access Montane discounts

All BMC members can access a discount of 15% on Montane clothing and equipment. Visit one of the retailers that stock Montane and show your BMC membership card to get the discount. A full list of Montane UK stockists can be found on their website. Montane is also stocked by BMC recommended retailer Cotswold Outdoor.

Oh dear, is this the demise of the good old UK independent outdoor shop? Although this kind of thing is inevitable it's a real shame to see such an esteemed organisation as the BMC contributing to the slow and painful death of our much loved specialist outdoor shops.

Montane’s claim of a lifetime guarantee for its products and new strap line of “better forever” in my experience is misleading and untrue. Over the years I have accumulated over 20 items of Montane equipment, so a loyal customer. Among these are four pairs of Terra Alpine shorts. All of these shorts were showing early signs of wear above the front lower hem. All were less than a year old an two pairs less than 6 months old.
After contacting Montane I sent them for inspection. Three months later they indicated the because I had cycled in them they were not prepared to replace, refund or repair them. They were, however, prepared to make a good will credit on their web shop due to the length of time they took to respond. I declined their offer.
It seems that the life time guarantee is only if you do not run or cycle but just walk. I have owned many less expensive shorts by M&S, Cotton traders, Columbia & Berghaus which have been subjected to the same activities as the Terra Alpine shorts were for many years but have shown no signs of similar degradation.
I have now had the four pairs of Montaigne shorts modified with a patch on the inside.
My message being do not be duped by these lofty claims of Better Forever or Lifetime Guarantee, they are in my experience meaningless.
