Montane becomes BMC’s new recommended clothing and pack partner

Posted by Alex Messenger on 16/10/2017

An exciting new partnership with Montane will support our vital access, conservation, safety and youth work, by giving financial support at a time when government funding for sport is being reduced by recent changes to Sport England funding.

British brand Montane specialises in engineering innovative and intelligently designed lightweight, breathable clothing and equipment specifically for climbers, hill walkers and trail runners, and has done so for nearly 25 years.

This exciting new partnership enables Montane to support our vital access, conservation, safety and youth work, by giving financial support at a time when government funding for sport is being reduced by recent changes to Sport England funding.

The partnership with Montane is part of a wider BMC strategy to work with new commercial partners to bridge this funding gap. Montane is our second strategic partner, and follows on from Cotswold Outdoor and Snow+Rock becoming the BMC’s recommended retail partners this August.

Jake Doxat, Managing Director of Montane says:

“We are excited to be selected as the recommended clothing and pack partner of the BMC. This partnership not only gives Montane a strong platform through which to engage with the British climbing and hill walking communities, but also allows us to play a role in the active support of vital grassroots work undertaken by the BMC to ensure the continued rights of access and conservation of our much-loved outdoor spaces as well as encouraging young people to challenge themselves in the outdoors.”

Dave Turnbull, BMC CEO added:

“We’re excited to welcome Montane on board as our recommended clothing and pack partner. Montane is an independent British brand with an established reputation. Their involvement not only enables the BMC to address a funding gap, but sees us gain an enthusiastic, relevant and innovative partner with a strong interest in climbing and hill walking across the UK. We look forward to working with them”.

How to access Montane discounts

Introducing Connor Hearson, youngest person to free the Nose, and Dad Jim

Yosemite climbing has come a long way since 1958, when the first ascent of the Nose was established over 47 days of aid-climbing. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first free ascent of the Nose – achieved by Lynn Hill in ’93 (“It goes, boys!”) – and a new record has just been set. Connor Herson has, at 15, become the youngest person to free-climb the route. According to his Dad, “Most importantly, no days of school were missed in the sending of this route!” Connor climbed it over three days starting on November 17.

Oh dear, is this the demise of the good old UK independent outdoor shop? Although this kind of thing is inevitable it's a real shame to see such an esteemed organisation as the BMC contributing to the slow and painful death of our much loved specialist outdoor shops.
