Malcolm Smith wins Lecco World Cup

Posted by on 28/06/2002

Congratulations to Malcolm Smith, who has just won the Lecco round of the Bouldering World Cup.

After qualifying in 'pole position' Malcolm was awarded the win after the final was cancelled due to bad weather. This however was no fluke, 10 days ago Malcolm qualified in pole for the Fiera di Primero round of the World Cup, finishing 5th on that occasion. Malc climbed 5 out of the 6 problems in the qualifier, beating former World Cup Champion Cristian Core of Italy by virtue of completing the problems in less attempts. The victory puts Malcolm in first place in the rankings, with a narrow 4 point lead over reigning World Cup Champion Jerome Meyer. There are 4 rounds remaining in the World Cup, with the final round in Grenoble, France, in early November. The next event is the UIAA-ICC European Championships in Chamonix on the 10/11 July. The BMC would like to thank UK Sport, Berghaus and Beal for their support of the British Team
