Know your different outdoor jacket types

Posted by Carey Davies on 17/06/2015

Waterproof, windproof, softshell, insulated... there are a range of different jackets available for outdoor use, and working out which ones you need can be confusing. Chris Townsend explains all in this BMC TV video.

If you're new to hill walking, going into an outdoor store for the first time can be an intimidating experience. You just want clothing that will keep you warm and dry - but then you realise there are umpteen different types of jacket available, all with slightly different functions.

Which ones do you actually need, and in what situations?

One of the world’s most respected experts on long-distance walking and backpacking, Chris Townsend, cuts through the confusion.

Chris is also the BMC’s first hill walking ambassador.
