GB National Development Squad 2020: Selection Policy Amendment

Posted by Lucinda Whittaker on 11/07/2019

An amendment has had to be made to the GB National Development Squad Selection Policy ahead of this weekends IFSC promo event, the Flatlander cup in Arnhem, Netherlands.

This amendment is due to the unforeseen circumstances that have resulted from the much lower than expected numbers of entrants to the event and the high proportion of GBR athletes competing. The attendance at this event from GBR athletes is unprecedented, however the category sizes in Youth C are such that in the male category 30% of the field are GBR in male and 50% of the field are GBR female.

This compared to the recent Imst Colours Festival Promo event whereby 6% of the male field were GBR and 10% female. Therefore, an amendment has had to be made to even out the unforeseeable disparity between these two events.

As this event is a pathway to squad selection for Youth C athletes the selection criteria from the results of this event has had to be revised to remain a challenging and robust criteria to achieve selection to the squad, and to be in line with the criteria for Youth B, A and Junior. It is also important to note that there will still be a further opportunity for athletes to achieve selection to the squad though the Profiling and Selection event being held on 9-10 November 2019.

We encourage athletes to attend IFSC promo events to begin their international experience and regardless of the selection opportunities this may bring, valuable learning and development can be gained from competing in other countries.

Please find the amendments in the policy document HERE under 7.1.1.2

Multi-award winning Climbing Blind on BBC4 this Wednesday

Last year, blind climber Jesse Dufton led every pitch of the classic East Face Route (E1 5b) on the Old Man of Hoy, placing all his own gear. Renowned adventure filmmaker Alastair Lee made a cracking film, supported by Montane and BMC TV, based around the ascent, which has been scooping up awards and is, amazingly for a climbing film, going to be shown on British telly. To top off the good news story, Jesse has just won a BMC Volunteer Award.
