Everest challenge for Westway climbers: update

Posted by Rob Adie on 04/09/2012

Three London climbers took part in a sponsored Everest Challenge at the Westway Climbing Centre on Friday 24 August to raise money for Team GB’s John Ellison’s ‘Just Giving’ fund for cancer research.

Following in the footsteps of Hillary and Tenzing three young London climbers, Libby Gamble (14), Micky Banert-Lucas (15) and Hannah Wuensche (13) made it to the peak of the worlds highest mountain in their quest to raise money for Cancer Research UK and to help boost John Ellison’s sterling efforts for this great cause.

Having set off from ‘base camp’ around 10am, each of the girls had a massive 111 6a routes to climb in order to match the heroes from 1953. Supported by many volunteers, belayers and parents at the centre the girls climbed for the best part of 10 hours in order to reach their goal, finishing their final route on the competition wall at 8pm in the evening.

Huge congratulations to all of the girls for their fantastic efforts and determination in raising s £800 so far and for boosting John’s overall amount to a current total of £16,300.00 raised in a little over four months. LIBBY – 14 years old
Climbing for 3 years, Westway Squad 1 year, competing for 1 year.
"I am thrilled to be able to help John with his fund raising by doing something that I truly love, climbing! John is inspirational in his attitude and have done so much for other people, so this is my chance to give something back.
I might not love him so much though after one hundred and twenty seven 6a’s!!!"

MICKY – 15 yeas old
Climbing for 5 years, Westway Squad for 4 years, competing for 3 years.
“John, I hope that whatever Libby, Hannah and I raise through the Everest Challenge helps you surpass your goal and helps cancer research find a cure so that other people in the future don’t have to suffer with cancer. You’ve inspired everyone with all you’ve done so far to raise money and I hope it continues”.

HANNAH – 13 years old
Climbing for 7 years, Westway Squad for 2 years, competing for 3 years.
"I've been wanting to do something like this for years, but have never really had the time. Now that I'm finally doing it I'm really psyched and it's great that I get to do it with my friends. I'm a bit nervous about how my various injuries (back, wrist and ankles) are going to cope with the number of routes, but I'm glad that I can do this to raise money to find a cure for cancer, whatever the outcome!"

Good luck guys; a brilliant idea and a great way to raise some money! Many people will be supporting you every step of the way & I hope this inspires more groups and individuals to conjure up new ways to raise money for such a deserving cause.
I'm sure many people who read how many routes you have to climb to reach the top of Everest, wildebs motivated to support you as best they can and continue the fund raising work you have done so well to promote - which has brought even more attention to encourage people to get out there and do something to help; good on you, good on you. ~ Marie. xx
