Tributes: Rick Allen dies in K2 avalanche

On July 25, Rick Allen (November 1954 - July 2021) died in an avalanche while attempting a new route on K2, aged 68. Something of a 'legendary grandfather' in Himalayan climbing circles, he was best known for making the first complete ascent of Nanga Parbat’s Mazeno Ridge in 2012, with Sandy Allan, for which the pair earned a Piolet D'Or.

Legendary climber Joe Brown dies

Legendary climber Joe Brown died, aged 89. Joe, originally a plumber’s apprentice from Manchester, took the British climbing world by storm after WWII. In the 50s and 60s, Joe’s dazzling performance on rock pushed British climbing standards and, in 1955, he climbed Kanchenjunga: the third highest mountain in the world. Ben Winston, filmmaker and climber, dies in Peak District

Last weekend, Sheffield climber, writer, photographer and filmmaker Ben Winston (39) collapsed while camping alone at Lawrencefield, one of his favourite spots. Despite help from Edale Mountain Rescue and the ambulance service, he did not survive.
