BMC Youth Climbing Series

Perhaps the most popular competition for young people is the BMC Youth Climbing Series that is run in England and Wales.  This is a fun competition that is open to all within the age categories.  So, whether you're an experienced climber or a beginner, this could be just the competition for you.  There are three regional rounds then a British Final when the top 3 in each category in each region competes.

There are five age categories in these competitions, with separate girls and boys competitions that follow the IFSC (International Federation of  Sport Climbing) system based on year of birth. The categories are called Youth A, B, C, D and E.

The competition is also run in Scotland under the parallel title of The M C of S Youth Climbing Series and Cymru/Wales have two regional rounds then an all Wales/Cymru final.  Again. the top three in each category are invited to the British Final.

British Lead Climbing Championships (BLCC)

The British Lead Climbing Championships is for the more experienced climber.  Since 2010 the Junior BLCC has been contested in separate IFSC youth categories A, B, C and Junior. Those in the Junior and Youth A categories are also eligible to compete in the senior BLCC.

Junior British Bouldering Championships (JBBC)

The Junior British Bouldering Championships is another competition for the more experienced climber. The 3 event series was introduced in 2013. It consists of two Open Youth Bouldering Events run by the BMC, and the Scottish Youth Bouldering Championships run by the MCofS.

The JBBC is contested in separate IFSC youth categories A, B, C and Junior.

BMC Open Youth Events

The BMC runs two Open Youth Events every year in both leading and bouldering. One event takes place in the summer (typically in July) and the other in winter (November/December time).

Both events have male and female categories in Youth C, Youth B, Youth A and Junior categories.

As the dates for these events vary from year to year you will need to check out the BMC websites for updates. Additionally you can also obtain the information via BMC facebook and BMC Twitter

Other competitions

Many climbing walls run their own competitions that are often open to young people.  To find out more about these competitions and any requirements that are specific to individual walls please contact the climbing walls direct.
