Members of the GB Team are competing at the Climbing World Championships this week (17 - 23 September) in Avilés, Spain.
Adrian Baxter and Kate Mills are representing Great Britain in the leading competition. 185 lead climbers are competing in the qualification round which started this morning. Adrian Baxter, who is also competing for GB in the speed competition, came second in the British Lead Climbing Championships this summer in Blackpool. Kate Mills reached the semi finals of the Bouldering World Cup event held in Birmingham last year.
Gaz Parry, Dave Barrans, Audrey Seguy, Mark Croxall and Kate Mills are in the line up for the bouldering comp which starts on Thursday. Gaz goes to the World Championships on hot form. This summer he retained his British Lead Climbing Championship title and won the British Bouldering Championships. Gaz has also won three international events this year - the E9 Masters in Norway, the Outdoor Games in Interlaken and very recently the prestigious Rockmaster in Italy. It's Dave Barrans' first full season competing internationally and it's Audrey Seguy's first international competition competing for Great Britain. Mark Croxall was winner of the Bouldering World Cup at Climb 05 in Birmingham.
The venue - the Quirinal Pavilion in the town of Avilés - holds over 4.000 spectators and tickets have been selling fast. Avilés gave the teams and spectators a warm welcome yesterday with a colourful opening ceremony. Finals will be held over the weekend.
The Climbing World Championships are organised by the IFSC - the International Federation of Sports Climbing. The Championships take place every two years and includes lead climbing, bouldering and speed competitions.
