BMC subsidised outdoor training courses at Plas y Brenin

Posted by Jane Thompson on 05/08/2015

The BMC and Plas y Brenin are working together to deliver a programme of subsidised training courses to help you to take your first steps in to the great outdoors.

The courses, subsidised by a grant from Sport England, cover the following areas:

  • Rock Climbing
  • Hill Walking
  • Scrambling
  • Winter Skills

All the courses take place at Plas y Brenin the National Mountain Sports Centre near Capel Curig in North Wales and range from 2-day to 5-day courses with a choice of accomodation options available, including full-board.

Rock Climbing - Ready to Rock courses

Ready to Rock courses are designed to help indoor climbers make their first moves onto rock.  There are two course options: a 2-day programme for adults and 5-day programme for 14-19yr olds and families.  To take advantage of what is on offer you will need to have been climbing indoors already as this is not a course for absolute beginners.  You will need to be able to put on and adjust a harness, tie in to the rope and belay a climbing partner. The instructors will then teach you additional skills to climb outside.

Walking - Head for the Hills courses

This 2-day course is designed to give a grounding in the essential skills you need for a lifetime of hill walking.  With no previous experience required it’s your chance to walk in one of Britain’s most spectacular mountain landscapes under the friendly and superb guidance of experienced instructors at a bargain price. Not a bad way to spend a weekend.

Hill walking course dates 2016

30 Apr -1 May 2016
4-5 June 2016
30-31 July 2016
17-18 Sept 2016

Scrambling – Leave the beaten track

This 2-day course is aimed at walkers who have some experience of walking in the British hills and mountains but wish to learn specialist techniques for getting over steeper, rockier, exposed ground.  To get the most from this course you should have a good level of mountain fitness and some experience of steep summer hillwalking.

The course will cover equipment, basic scrambling techniques, movement skills, assessing risk and route choice, hazard management, simple ropework for scrambles, and plenty of time on the hills.

Scrambling course dates 2016

23-24 April 2016
7-8 May 2016
21-22 May 2016
25-26 June 2016

Winter Skills – Confidence to go out in the hills

Do you enjoy hill walking in the summer?  Do you want to take your skills to the next level and discover the delights of winter walking? No previous experience of winter hillwalking is necessary. However, you should have some summer hillwalking experience and as winter days can be strenuous, a reasonable level of fitness is important.

The two key focuses on this 2-day course are navigation and security on winter terrain. You will be out on the hill each day where winter navigation skills, use of ice axe and crampons, terrain and route choice, and winter equipment selection will be covered.

The Welsh winter can be fickle, and snow and ice conditions cannot be guaranteed. Throughout the course there will be a flexible approach to the programme to make the best possible use of the prevailing conditions. If there is no snow the course will still run.

Winter skills course dates 2016

23-24 January 2016
6-7 February 2016
13-14 February 2016
27 Feb - 28 Feb 2016
5-6 March 2016
3-4 December 2016 - FULL
10-11 December 2016 - FULL

So to compete in this industry all those freelance instructors, who spent a lot of time and money to earn their qualifications, ironically at the Brenin, now have to take a drop in income otherwise they lose their a living? What's AMI's stand on this?

This seems like a great idea but, on checking, there are no subsidised courses available at all; will more become available in the future or is this scheme no longer running?
