BMC Membership fees 2023

Posted by Clonagh Delderfield on 30/09/2022

Thank you to our members for your continued support of the BMC. The contribution of your membership fees are key to the ongoing work that we do on behalf of you and wider communities across climbing, mountaineering and hillwalking. Without you we simply could not do what we do.

Last year we committed to notifying members by the end of every September of any changes to their fees for the following year, in-line with annual tracking of cost increases incurred in delivering our member services and activities. This year we appreciate the additional pressures that everyone is facing as a result of high inflation and as such, we have absorbed as much of the overall inflationary costs as possible, making every effort to minimise how much we pass on to our membership.

For 2023, Individual membership fees will increase by £2.45. The full list of 2023 fees are below and they will continue to reviewed on an annual basis.

From 1 January 2023 membership fees will change to:

Individual membership fees

Individual Membership – £43.90

Student/Unemployed/U18 – £27.85

Under 27 Membership – £26.35

Family Membership – £76.80

Upgrade from Club Membership – £16.70

Club membership fees

Adult Club Membership – £22.25

Unemployed/U18 Club Membership – £16.45

Student Club Membership – £18.35

The BMC remains committed to providing its members with the best value service possible while representing the interests of our members and wider communities. We hope that you continue to get the best value possible from being part of this large and active community, knowing that your fees support valuable work, and from the range of exclusive benefits available to you, helping you get the most out of the activities you love.

Making the most of your membership

The BMC has a proven reputation of providing guidance to clubs and, should incidents occur at club meets, coordinating professional and direct support.

All of our income goes back into the work we do - your membership fees go towards:

  • Protecting existing outdoor spaces and regenerating them for the future – including our Climate Project and Mend Our Mountains initiatives
  • Protecting members rights to access our shared spaces – working with partners across the sector on key issues that affect our members such as the Right To Roam bill
  • Helping members to participate responsibly and safely through the continual development of our network of clubs, regions and volunteers, sharing best-practice guidance, and overseeing technical safety of equipment
  • Supporting members to get the most out of their activities through training and development – including our Hiking Essentials webinars and Winter Skills courses
  • Developing the sport of competition climbing to give climbers in Great Britain the best opportunity to achieve success on the international stage – such as delivery of the IFSC World Cup in Edinburgh

Members also receive benefits that help you get the most out of your activities and save you money, including:

  • 10% off BMC products – with a range of specialist outdoor equipment, maps, guides and kit you didn’t even know you needed.
  • 15% off purchases at Cotswold Outdoors, Snow + Rock and Runners Need

Previously, over 65's (club and individual memberships) have qualified as a concession rate alongside unemployed & U18's. Are you now assuming retired = unemployed due to fluctuating retirement ages. Can we have some clarity please!

In our Mountaineering Club a member, who has recently retired and is no longer is employed, has stated that they are unemployed and, therefore, should pay the Unemployed/U18 Club Membership from January next year.
Clonagh Delderfield's answer, below, docent specifically answer this. Please provide some clarity.
Thank you
