Are you a hill walker wanting to get more involved with the BMC? Are you passionate about big issues affecting the hills and mountains, like litter, erosion, open access or rewilding? Then come along to the BMC Hill Walking Symposium - there are a few places still available.

The first ever BMC Hill Walking Symposium will encompass all these things, and more. The event aims to reach BMC members and non-members who are interested in hill walking and would like to get more involved as volunteers but have never quite been sure how, and aims to help existing volunteers to develop their understanding of hill walking issues.  If you are keen to discuss current issues affecting hill walking today, want to shape what happens next with the Mend Our Mountains appeal, or you just want know how to introduce new people to the outdoors, then please come along.

Run over the weekend, 24-25 November at the YHA Castleton, Losehill hall, the first day will be will be a mix of presentations and discussion with the opportunity to attend 2 workshops exploring the big issues: organising local conservation efforts, leading walks, landscape issues affecting out uplands, navigation skills and emergency procedures in the hills. These will be followed by an open discussion on the future of access in England and Wales – should we look more to Scotland’s open access system for inspiration?

The second day we will head outdoors, taking full advantage of the location in the heart of the Peak District with a choice of walks focusing on advanced navigation techniques, the peatland restoration work of Moors for the Future, local geology and ecology, and the past and present work of Mend Our Mountains in the area. There is a £35 delegate fee for BMC members and £45 for non-members which will include a delegate pack, refreshments, lunch, dinner and B&B accommodation at the YHA Castleton, Losehill Hall.
