Artists of the Alpine Club now in stock

Posted by Tony Ryan on 11/03/2011

A new edition of the illustrated history of the artists of the Alpine Club documents artists whose work forms part of the club’s collection.

The Alpine Club’s 600-strong collection of paintings, drawings and engravings includes many works by professionally trained artists, some by unknown hands, and others by enthusiastic amateurs who wanted to record their climbing achievements or simply capture a mountain scene.

Biographical details of over 100 artists are provided and accompanied by illustrations of their work. Amongst them are legendary Alpine conqueror Edward Whymper, Everest pioneers Howard Somervell and Edward Norton, modern talents such as Andy Parkin and Julian Cooper, and art critic and social thinker John Ruskin.

Compiled and written by Peter Mallalieu, the club’s Keeper of Pictures, this book provides an invaluable source of information for archivists and those with an interest in mountain art.

The Artists of the Alpine Club is available to purchase from the BMC online shop or call the Membership Services Team on 0161 445 6111.

BMC member price - £22.50
Non-member price - £25.00
