What's new in the BMC online shop - May 2012

Check out the latest additions to the BMC online shop, including some brand new walking, scrambling and climbing guides.

What’s New
For walkers, The Low Fells features the ten finest, classic routes on Cumbria's lower fells in a popular pocketable format. Two other new walking guidebooks from Pocket Mountains cover areas in Scotland, each featuring 40 favourite walks: in Loch Ness, Inverness, Black Isle and Affric you get a selection of walks in the countryside around the most famous of all lochs, and in Scotland’s most beautiful glen; whilst the Inner Hebridean islands of Mull and Iona offer wild coastal scenery, grand mountain views, pretty villages and stunning sandy beaches.

Scrambles in the Dark Peak describes over 40 winter and summer routes, with plenty of links and extensions to make up longer, more challenging days on the moors; perfect for the more adventurous walker looking to spice up their outings, and also for climbers looking for something away from the mainstream crags.

Over The Moors is the new BMC Definitive Climbers’ Guide to Moorland Gritstone; bringing the same superb quality established by recent BMC guidebooks to the crags of the wild upland moors of  Kinder, Bleaklow, Chew and Marsden. South West Climbs: Volume 1 covers some of the superb climbing on the south-west peninsula of England, including Avon and Cheddar Gorges, Wye Valley and Dorset. Maple Canyon Rock Climbs is a comprehensive guide to one of the most popular summer sport-climbing destinations in the USA.

For pad people, Boulder Albarracin is a guide to one of the best bouldering areas in southern Europe; packed with full colour action photographs and easy to follow maps and topos. The new edition of Joshua Tree Bouldering documents over 2000 problems, from some of the first and most-historic boulders in the US, through classics of the 70s and 80s, to recent v-double-digit testpieces. The latest addition to the Mountaineers Outdoor Expert Series, Bouldering: Movement, Tactics and Problem Solving demonstrates not just the basics of how to boulder, but also how to get better at it and take it to the next level.

The Haute Route, from Chamonix to Zermatt, is undoubtedly the world’s most famous ski traverse, and this new guidebook provides a wealth of practical advice, as well as presenting each stage in detail through comprehensive route descriptions, profiles of the climbs and descents, sketch maps and photos showing the route to follow.

Schiehallion, Ben Lawers & Glen Lyon is the latest addition to the British Mountain Map series, and includes 27 Munros, 15 Corbetts and 4 Grahams.on a single waterproof and tear-resistant 1:40,000 sheet. Everest & Gokyo is a detailed 1:60,000 scale map of the Everest region including the Cho La and Renjo passes. The map has a grid lines with reference numbers and a detailed English key sheet. Time taken and height gained from place to place are also shown on a table on the cover. 1:4000 scale maps of Namche Bazar and Lukla, showing roads and local amenities, are also included.

Fiva: An Adventure That Went Wrong is the epic true account from Gordon Stainforth of a near-death experience on a mountain in Norway in 1969. Winner of the 2011 Boardman Tasker Prize, Freedom Climbers tells the story of the extraordinary Polish adventurers who emerged from under the blanket of oppression following the Second World War to become the world's leading Himalayan climbers. Straight Up: Himalayan Tales of the Unexpected is a collection of stories by Steve Berry, recounting his early expeditions to the Himalaya prior to 1987, including encounters with bears, escapes from avalanches, summit successes and failures, love stories, mystical connections, and grapples with bureaucracy. On Top of the World: The New Millennium looks at the development of climbing on the world's highest mountains during the first decade of the 21st century, and is Illustrated with stunning images.

Coming Soon
Chamonix Mountain Adventures is a handy guidebook to mountain activities based in Chamonix in the French Alps. There are selections of graded routes described for walking, trekking, mountaineering, mountain biking, road cycling, via ferratas, rock climbing and bouldering, with clear advice for novices for each activity.

The Medium Nepal Country Route Planner is a 1:850,000 overview map of Nepal covering the Great Himalaya Trail and National Parks, with towns, roads and rivers shown. It’s a very handy sized map, containing lots of information, and is the perfect planning tool for any trip to Nepal.
