Staden Quarry Update

Posted by Rob Dyer on 13/09/2010

What is happening at Staden (aka Cowdale) Quarry?

Peak Access reps will be at the BMC Area Meeting in the Crown, Glossop, on 16 September to answer any questions you have about this important venue. A number of new ‘Private Land’ notices are about to appear. All the land is privately owned, and there is no general right of access to it for anyone. However the notices will not apply to climbers who, by kind permission of the landowner, retain right of access to the rock faces for climbing. We believe the notices may not make this explicit, but the BMC has confirmed that is the position.

The window of opportunity to comment to High Peak Borough Council planners on the proposed phase 1 development of the site has now closed, and the planning application is scheduled to be determined on 11 October. The developers and land owner have given a commitment that, assuming the development goes ahead, neither the climbing nor access to the faces will be jeopardised, and the climbing faces will be dedicated for open access under CRoW. The BMC has gratefully acknowledged this in its submission to the planning authority. This is a lengthy and complex proposal, which has generated a number of entirely opposed reactions.

The Area Meeting is the place to find out a bit more. See you there.
