Single Pitch Award

Posted by Jon Garside on 14/07/2008
The Single Pitch Award is for short crags, like gritstone.

The Single Pitch Award (SPA) is for those who wish to supervise a group on single pitch crags and climbing walls.

The training and assessment covers such skills as choice of venue, rope management, correct use of equipment, group management, emergency procedures, crag etiquette, access and conservation.

Mountain Leader Training England has produced a DVD showcasing the eight leadership and instructional awards available in the UK.

The film gives a great insight into the SPA course. It portrays a climbing group under instruction at a crag and follows a group on an SPA training course.

Watch the SPA film on BMC TV:

The SPA handbook lays out the award in more detail.

If planning on undertaking the Single Pitch Award, first register for the scheme with a home nation training board - see links opposite. You can view forthcoming courses in England and Wales. Alternatively contact English and Welsh providers direct, to see when they are delivering courses.
