Over the weekend of 3 and 4 August two BMC Open Youth competitions were held in Leeds. The first was a bouldering competition. The second was a lead climbing competition. They were held at different walls in the city.
The competitions have been designed to be fun, but also to be competitive events.
Additionally, the results from these events will be used as part of the continuing monitoring and selection process for the GB Junior Bouldering and Lead Teams - more information here
This has led to a continual cranking-up of the standards - in both the bouldering and the leading competitions. And this year was no exception with some amazing personal performances at both events.
Both events were open to young climbers born between 1 January 1994 and 31 December 2001 in two year bands categories, for both boys and girls, that are known by their IFSC category names. These are: Youth C, Youth B, Youth A and Juniors.
Each event has a qualifying stage, that everyone does, and then those that do best go on to the final.

The Bouldering Competition
The BMC Open Youth Summer Boulder Competition was held at the Depot, Leeds on Saturday August 3.
This event was also the third and final round of the BMC Junior British Bouldering Championships. Amazingly, Izzie Hough, William Bosi, Jen Wood and Nathan Phillips won their categories scoring maximum points by winning all three rounds!

The Lead Climbing Competition
The Open Youth Summer Lead Climbing Competition was held at the Leeds Wall on Sunday 4 August.
There were a number of notable strong performances. Peter Dawson won male Youth B and Connor Byrne won Male A.
Youth B girls - Rebecca Kinghorn and Hannah Slanney - climbed higher on the orange route (7c) that was the Youth B and C Female final than all other female clmbers apart from Molly Thompson-Smith (who won Female Youth A). That means that they out climbed all the rest of the Youth A girls and the Junior Females who tried that route, apart from Molly, some of whom are 5 years older than them!

BMC thanks supporters
The BMC would like to thank all those who contributed to the success of these events. This includes the vast number of enthusiatic and dedicated volunteers who do such a fantastic job. They judge, belay, score the event, register competitors, work the videos that records the routes (where used), run errands, and so on, the list is virtually endless. The events really couldn't take place without their outstanding and unstinting support. And, also, let's not forget the young people themselves and all their numerous supporters!
Thanks also go to all the professionals who work at the event. This includes the staff at both The Depot and Leeds Wall for making us feel so welcome, the route-setters for great routes, the BMC staff both present at the events and those in the office who work behind the scenes.
Finally, thanks also go to the event sponsors: Mammut and DMM.
