Climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are the principle objectives of the clubs featured in the list. They are all based in and controlled by their own members. All club applications are submitted to the BMC National Council for approval.
Nine areas form the democratic base of the BMC, and serve as local forums for discussion and debate about mountaineering issues. The clubs are listed under the relevant area, but usually accept members from other areas. There is a small number of national clubs and these are listed separately. Buxton Mountaineering Club
We are small local club with around 50 members. People with children and beginners are welcome, although no formal instruction is available (Do not be put off by this, if you make it known that you want to climb, we will enjoy seeing that you have a go).
Club activities fall into 3 groups. Tuesday evenings at crags in the Peak District or during the winter at JD Wetherspoons pub on Fairfield Rd, Buxton. Monthly weekend hut meets, principally in North Wales and the Lakes, but occasionally in Yorkshire or the Brecon Becons. And adhoc events throughout the year.
The best reason for joining is that it gives a pool of people to climb, walk, ski, camp, canoe, go munro bashing or even watch Shakespeare at Buxton Opera House!

LMC Mountaineering Club
We are a small, friendly walking club with the majority of our members based in the South of England. The Club was formed in 1975 by Shell employees in London, but we are now disassociated from Shell, and membership is open to anyone. We aim to provide a varied programme of events and meet roughly once a month, either for day walks in the London/South East area or for weekends further afield. Accommodation on these weekends would usually be in pubs or B&Bs but occasionally in self-catering cottages or hostels.
Members completed the South West Coast Path in 2023 and the Wales Coast Path is the next challenge. In recent years, members have participated in the annual Crickhowell Walking Festival in South Wales and there is the occasional social event in London. Midland Association of Mountaineers Ltd
The Midland Association of Mountaineers, MAM, is one of Britain’s leading mountaineering clubs. Founded in 1922 it has grown from its historical links in the Midlands area into a national club with some 550 members across the UK.
Its membership includes mountaineers, rock climbers, snow and ice climbers and hill walkers, many of whom are also mountain bikers, fell runners or wild swimmers. Whatever their interests and level of expertise they are all share a passion for enjoying activities in the mountain environment.
MAM own 4 properties: Glan Dena in the Ogwen Valley, Snowdonia, Low House and Low Cottage in Coniston in the Lake District, and Star Cottage in Two Dales in the Peak District. These provide some of the best maintained, quality mountain hut facilities in the UK.
Members can stay at these huts and bring their guests. MAM also has reciprocal hut use arrangements with kindred clubs which gives MAM members access to a wide range of properties across the UK.

Red Rope Walking & Climbing Club
Red Rope is a walking and climbing club, with socialist, left-wing, green and alternative roots. The club has over 200 members in a dozen regions of the UK, has a very inclusive ethos, and at least half our members are women.
Our activities include country walking, hill-walking, and mountaineering, plus climbing in a few of our regions. We organise day events and weekend trips, with a popular programme of longer ‘National Trips’ to hill-walking areas such as North Wales, the Lakes and Scotland, including mountain trips summer and winter. We use the network of ‘huts’ owned by BMC clubs plus other bunkhouses or youth hostels and arrange occasional camping trips. We have a special arrangement with Lancashire Mountaineering Club for shared use of their two huts in Snowdonia and the Lake District.
The club is organised around a principle of sharing. Membership and trip charges are on a scale related to your income, making club activities affordable for all. On trips we share communally cooked meals, usually vegetarian, and we try to share transport where possible.
Our regions vary in their activities, depending on who is in the group and the location. You can join your nearest region for walks, socials and trips but are very welcome on any region’s events, and the National trips, all advertised in a monthly mailing. We have groups in Bristol & South-West, East Anglia, Leicester & Nottingham, Liverpool & Merseyside, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, the Midlands, and Scotland.

The Fell and Rock Climbing Club of the English Lake District Limited
The FRCC, founded in 1906, is one of the major mountaineering clubs in the country. Its objectives are to encourage mountaineering and rock climbing particularly in the Lake District. Experience of and an interest in the Lake District mountains are among the requirements for membership. The Club has some of the leading UK climbers amongst its members and especially welcomes applications from active climbers and mountaineers over the age of 18 to continue its traditions of excellence.
Members are involved in all types of mountain-related activities including rock, snow and ice climbing, mountain walking, back-packing, trekking, orienteering, fell running, skiing, mountain biking etc.
The Club owns five properties in the Lake District and two in Scotland. There is an extensive programme of meets which occur almost every weekend based on our own or kindred club huts throughout the UK. Overseas meets are also organised several times per year in various parts of Europe.
The Club publishes the definitive climbing guidebooks of the English Lake District for summer and winter climbing. These can be purchased on-line via the Club website. An increasing number of climbs are being made available as Apps. A Club Journal is produced every two years and quarterly Chronicle is distributed to members. Members are also regularly kept informed by e-newsletters, the website and Facebook.
Applicants are proposed and seconded for membership by Full members who have a good knowledge of the applicant. Election to the Club is via the Committee.
The Gentian Mountaineering & Hillwalking Club
We are a national club, with male and female members from all over Britain. We organise a programme of meets throughout the year in areas such as the Lake District, Wales, the Peak District,Yorkshire Dales and Scotland. There is also an annual trip abroad, e.g. Mallorca, the French Alps, Pyrenees, Austrian Alps or the Costa Blanca.
We book a very wide range of accommodation. At one end of the spectrum we use remote ‘huts’ with basic facilities. At the other end, we visit luxury lodges with twin rooms, wifi and ensuites. Most accommodation is somewhere in the middle. Full details of the accommodation are always given on the programme.
Experienced Club members are always willing to share their knowledge. In addition, members are eligible to attend one-day skills training courses run by the BMC at a reduced price for club members.
The Club is probably best described as a "hard walking club". Most members are not in the "super fit" category but we do have many strong hill walkers and many who enjoy scrambling.
Our Club prides itself on being very friendly and welcoming to new members. Unlike many clubs we cater together. In the evening there is always a vegetarian and non-veg option as well as starter and dessert. There's beer and wine as well!

The Rucksack Club Ltd
Founded in Manchester in 1902, our club has 550 members who enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities including climbing, walking, mountaineering, biking and running. With a membership spread across Britain (from Cornwall to Sutherland) we are very much a national club although traditionally members have lived around Manchester and the Peak and this is reflected in our weekday Meets programme. We also have a strong Merseyside contingent.
The Club has an active Meets programme with walking and climbing Meets to suit all tastes every Wednesday, most frequently in the Peak District. Weekend Meets make the most of our three mountain huts based in central Snowdonia (Nant Peris), the southern Lakes (Duddon Valley) and Glencoe (overlooking Loch Linnhe). We also travel further afield with regular Alpine trips and a winter sun-rock Meet firmly on the Meets calendar.
Friendship has always been at the heart of the club and our social events cater for all ages. London Rock Climbers Outdoors

Bowline Climbing Club
The Bowline Climbing Club is an active and friendly Leicester-based club with a rich history. We hold regular meets throughout the UK and further afield. As well as rock climbing and mountaineering, club members participate in many other outdoor activities including fell running and mountain biking. We also have access to our very own club hut in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park.
Most weekends club members go climbing in the Peak or go away for a meet. We also meet locally on Tuesday evenings for bouldering at the The Climbing Station in Loughborough. Thursday evening is climbing either at The Tower climbing wall in Leicester, or outdoors if the weather is good and the evening light enough.

We are a friendly and active Solihull/South Birmingham based club with members from all over the Midlands and further afield. Our aim is to get out and enjoy the outdoors across the UK and abroad as much as possible. We welcome new members who are 18 or over, with any level of experience.
Our members enjoy many activities including trad and sport climbing, bouldering, walking, mountaineering and biking in all seasons. We organise an annual meets programme which includes one full weekend meet each month in locations across Wales, Scotland and England. Wellingborough Mountaineering Club
This friendly club meets weekly on a Wednesday night at the local Pinnacle Climbing Wall ( NN4 8ES ) and on the third Wednesday of the month at the Brampton Halt Pub (NN6 8BA). Club Meets are usually at our hut in Snowdonia and the main events are in July for a BBQ, November for Bonfire Night and a December Christmas Meet and Dinner. There are small groups of people who meet on a more regular basis at the mountain hut and activities vary from hillwalking to rockclimbing, past events have included winter meets in Scotland. Family membership is welcomed and is necessary if U18s wish to join. Children are either free (U12) or discounted (U18) on club meets.

If you are looking for a friendly & active mountaineering club in the West Midlands then West Brom MC is probably right for you. Our 200 strong membership is attracted from all over the West Midlands as we are one of the few clubs that runs a regular monthly coach to the hills, so that members and guests can walk & climb sociably, without having to worry about parking or driving home. And of course a coach also opens up the possibility of linear routes across the mountains!
Our members enjoy climbing, hillwalking, scrambling, biking, running, surfing and similar activities, plus they have exclusive use of our hut in Snowdonia. The club has been in existence since 1982. We meet every Tuesday evening, local climbing walls in the winter, local peak district grit and limestone crags in the summer. We have monthly weekend meets in the UK especially during the summer months, (Lake District, Wales, Scotland, Pembroke, Cornwall etc ) and have ventured abroad into Europe.
We are a very sociable group and look forward to a Christmas meet each year, where we usually go hill walking. We have experience in summer and winter climbing but also have runners, mountain bikers and skiers in the club.

In the summer we have regular evening meets to the local crags of Helsby, Frodsham, Pex Hill and also weekly visits to the local indoor climbing walls. Innominata Mountain Club
We have around 60 active members based in South Manchester and further afield. For the climbers we have weekly Tuesday evening meets, at the wall in winter and in the Peak/Lancashire in the summer. We also have a few organised day trips further afield and one or two sport climbing trips abroad. Even when there is no formal meet there are always members out climbing most weekends. Walks are arranged on a monthly basis for the walkers. These range from local walks within the Peak District to long days out in places like the Lakes, North Wales or the Howgills. There are also opportunities for walking if attending one of the monthly weekends away.
We also organise monthly hut/camping meets to Wales, the Lakes, Scotland etc which are usually attended by climbers, walkers and mountaineers. As a BMC club we can book lots of different huts, we have established a good reputation with the huts so we have a great array of huts to choose from.
We welcome novices and experts alike, you just need the minimal equipment and for climbers we prefer you to have enough experience to belay safely.

The Lancashire Climbing and Caving Club is an active and friendly club, formed in 1936 and still going strong (about 200 members)! Although we are centred in Lancashire, we have members in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Wales and further afield.
We have meets most weekends, which include caving, climbing (both trad and sport), walking, mountaineering and ice climbing, as well as regular trips abroad throughout the year. We also have regular and well-attended mid-week evening meets at local venues, and members who get out in the day mid-week.
We have two huts, one near Dow Crag in the Lake District, and one below the Moelwyn Crags in North Wales. We have a quarterly newsletter and publish a journal.

Affiliated with the BMC since 1983, we are a laid back, friendly and fun group of around 40 members covering a wide range of ages. Based in Glossop, our main activity is hill walking, usually around the Peak District, with walks every Sunday typically ranging from 7 to 12 miles long. Members also meet regularly during the week, and we often have trips away to the Lake District, North Wales, and Scotland; we usually run at least two international trips each year. Castle Mountaineering Club
Founded in 1967, the Castle is a Sheffield-based mountaineering club, but we're not just about mountaineering. Our members undertake a wide range of activities including rock climbing, walking, trekking, backpacking, ski mountaineering, cycling, ski touring and mountain biking. What unites us is our love of the outdoors and enjoying it with others. We're a rather sociable and supportive bunch with a lot of combined experience. We have a programme that covers 52 weeks of the year with weekly weekend local meets, and monthly hut or camping weekends. During the summer there is also weekday evening climbing in the Peak District. The Castle has a club house behind the Rising Sun on Abbey Lane, Sheffield S11 9ND with its own indoor climbing wall. Gritstone Club
The Gritstone Club was founded in 1922 to encourage pursuits of mountaineering, rock climbing, hill walking, potholing and skiing.
We accept members of any experience who have a strong enthusiasm to take part in outdoor activities the main emphasis being on walking, rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering.
Most of our members live in West Yorkshire which makes arranging meets easy but we also have many members who live further afield and enjoy the facilities the club has to offer.
We hold regular mid-week and weekend meets throughout the year for both walking and climbing. In Winter the mid-week climbing meet takes place indoors usually at the Big Depot Leeds.
Meets are held locally, throughout the UK and there are also usually several international meets in the calendar.
The club is very friendly towards families and there are usually several family meets arranged each year.
We own two well positioned club huts, one in the Lake District near Thirlmere and one in the Yorkshire Dales near Ribble head.

The activities of the club are fellwalking, scrambling and mountaineering. All walks are led by club members. They are experienced but with no qualifications.

York Mountaineering Club
York Mountaineering Club is a mixed-membership group spanning an age range from early twenties to early sixties.
People who are relatively new to outdoor activities can mix easily with more experienced mountaineers. Members' interests vary, including hill walking, back-packing, munro bagging, indoor climbing, rock climbing, winter (ice) climbing, bouldering, alpine climbing, mountaineering, fell running, skiing and snowboarding. The Club has a long history and has been active since 1948. We extend a warm welcome to new members:- the only requirement is an interest in pursuing hill-going or climbing.
Opportunities to develop outdoor skills can arise informally through participation. The Club also runs occasional skills courses and first aid courses.

Yorkshire Ramblers' Club
Founded over a century ago in 1892, the Yorkshire Ramblers’ Club is one of the UK’s senior mountaineering, exploration and caving clubs. The YRC is involved not just in one outdoor 'activity' but in exploration in its widest sense. So, whether you are a caver, climber, mountaineer, scrambler, hill-walker or ski-tourer, the club has plenty to offer you. The one thing we never do is ramble and we have no links whatsoever with the Ramblers Association!
We have an active programme of meets throughout the year spread across the UK and internationally. The meets list also includes a couple of European trips and often a trip to one of the greater ranges - Himalayas/ South America/ Californian High Sierras/ China etc.
Exploration has always been a key part of the club's ethos both in formal expeditions and through members organising their own trips. You can read about these and about our Club meets in our Journal which is published annually or checkout our Facebook page.
The YRC has two well-equipped properties: a traditional Lakes cottage in Little Langdale and a purpose-built club headquarters near Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales. Members can stay at these huts and bring their guests and families. We also have reciprocal hut use arrangements with several kindred clubs which gives our members access to a wider range of accommodation at favourable rates.
We have some 160 members living across the UK, but our roots are in firmly in Yorkshire. We take pride in giving prospective members and guests a warm welcome, so why not visit our website, see what we are up to next and join in.
UK meets are catered for by the organiser, so you just need to bring lunches and refreshments. On the hill, members and guests fragment into smaller parties by inclination and ability to tackle their mutual objectives, so you will always find a few of us who are up for whatever you want to do.

Cleveland Mountaineering Club

The Cleveland Mountaineering Club holds a weekly Tuesday evening meet, at local crags (North York Moors/Cleveland, Brimham, Almscliff etc) in the summer and local climbing wall (Newton Aycliffe) throughout the winter. There is a programme of winter slide shows, walks, weekend trips to climb further afield, including Scotland, North Wales and beyond. The CMC has a comfortable hut in Patterdale. Enthusiastic new members of all abilities are very welcome. Whilst the focus of the club is rock climbing, members' active interests span climbing, mountaineering, walking and biking.

Climbers' Club
The Climbers' Club, founded in 1898, is one of the foremost mountaineering clubs in Great Britain. Its objectives are to encourage mountaineering and rock climbing and to promote the general interests of mountaineers and the mountain environment.
This national club owns seven huts in the UK, produces an annual journal and publishes climbing guidebooks (currently 18 in number) covering most of Wales and Southern England. Some guidebook profits are distributed from The Climbers' Club Colin Kirkus Fund to assist climbing-related projects.
Candidates are proposed for membership and may be elected by Committee provided adequate support is obtained.

Active, friendly club, encourages new members. Sunday climbing meet at Capel Curig. Fortnightly walks, monthly slide show in winter and evening meets in summer. Away meets in Scotland and Lakes, and abroad in the summer. Journal published quarterly.

The Craven Mountaineering Club is a friendly club based in Skipton, North Yorkshire with a regular programme of climbing and walking meets in the Dales, Lake District, Scotland and North Wales.

The KMC is a Manchester based Club with over 150 members with a wide range of ages. We organise weekly meets throughout the year featuring a range of activities catering for different tastes - walking, climbing, winter mountaineering, as well as indoor lectures, social events and 'one-offs'. We have a superb hut above Llanberis, which is frequently used as a base for Club activities in Snowdonia and Anglesey.

North Kingston Hillwalking Club
We are a hill-walking club based in Kingston-upon-Thames, but with members from the wider area around south-west London and Surrey, and several members from further afield. We organise weekend trips to the main hill walking areas of England and Wales (Lakes, Wales and Peaks etc) most months, an annual week in Scotland and occasional European trips. We also organise a monthly day walk usually around the Surrey hills mostly at weekends.
Ohjac Club
The Over the Hill and Just Around the Corner (OHJAC) Club is a club for people with interests in walking, hill-walking, trekking, climbing and mountaineering based in East Devon, England.
Formed in February 2004 the Club now has over 50 members who participate in regular walks/ventures in the UK and Europe, and social activities.
Polaris Mountaineering Club
We have a nucleus of members in and around the Peak area, the rest being randomly scattered around the country, brought together regularly by our common love of the outdoors. Activities include climbing, walking, mountain biking, canoeing, winter mountaineering, cross country skiing, etc. We're a small club and as such are not able to "teach" climbing, though novice climbers will always find encouragement.
We have a programme of meets throughout the year anywhere from Lands End to the NW Highlands, and small local groups of members who make more casual arrangements for outings in their area (typically South Coast, Peak District, Yorkshire, North West). We’ve also ventured further afield with longer trips to the Alps, the Dolomites and Sardinia, and several of our members have walked and climbed in North & South America, Canada and Nepal.

Friendly club that welcomes all of those interested in mountain sports, from walking and climbing to fell running and mountaineering. Additional Information
Climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are the principle objectives of the clubs featured in the list.
They are all based in and controlled by their own members. All club applications are submitted to the BMC National Council for approval.
Eleven areas form the democratic base of the BMC, and serve as local forums for discussion and debate about mountaineering issues. The clubs are listed under the relevant area, but usually accept members from other areas. There is a small number of national clubs and these are listed separately. The contact for each club listed here will normally be able to supply you with details of their club membership requirements, activities, meeting places, etc.
