Congratulations to Alan Hinkes, who has been awarded an OBE for services to sport in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.
In May of 2005 Alan became the first Briton, and one of only 13 mountaineers, to have climbed all 14 of the world’s 8000-metre peaks – an achievement which required 18 years of commitment and focus. After successfully completing “Challenge 8000”, Alan was made an honorary citizen of his home town Northallerton, and also made it into
Yorkshire Greats, Sir Bernard Ingham’s book of the county’s fifty finest men and women. Sir Geoffrey Boycott didn’t even feature in that! In true sportsman style, Alan was heard to say that he was “over the moon” with his OBE. Alan is Chair of the BMC North East Area Committee, and also a member of the BMC International Committee.
