Don't get lost...take a bearing.

Navigation is the fundamental skill required by anyone wanting to travel safely through the mountains and hills in all the conditions they present. A new definitive guide for walkers, mountaineers and leaders covers every aspect of mountain navigation.

Efficient navigation is not about knowing where you are every minute of the day; it’s about knowing how to find out where you are and how to get to where you want to go. A good range of skills, knowledge and experience through practice will give you confidence in your judgement. Effective navigation not only helps to make you safer on the hill, it can also mean a more enjoyable day out.

Written by Carlo Forte, Chief Instructor of the National Mountain Centre at Plas y Brenin, Navigation in the Mountains is intended as a resource for anyone wishing to learn how to navigate, and for those who wish to improve their skills; it also provides useful information for the many people involved in teaching navigation skills.

The handbook has a functional design, with easy reference colour coded pages, and is divided into sections including:

  • All aspects of mountain navigation
  • Additional techniques required in winter
  • Adaptations in techniques for use overseas
  • Use of GPS
  • Digital mapping
  • Teaching of navigation

Navigation in the Mountains is the fourth in a series of manuals published by Mountain Training UK, and is the official navigation handbook of the Mountain Training award schemes. Other titles in the series cover Hill Walking, Rock Climbing, and Winter Skills.

Take a bearing and follow it to the BMC online shop to pick up your copy of Navigation in the Mountains; or call the Membership Services Team on 0161 445 6111.
