Get involved with the new working group for student club members
The BMC Clubs Committee has been working on how we can better engage clubs with the work of the BMC. Student clubs in particular face a lot of unique issues due to the high turnover in their membership and the large number of novices they bring through. Because of this, we’re trying especially to reach out to student clubs to help foster better links between them and their representatives within the BMC.
As part of this we’re setting up a new working group to bring together different voices from the spectrum of student clubs. The aim is to help guide the BMC in shaping its support for clubs, both through feedback and discussing new ideas, and to provide a forum for sharing information and best practice between clubs.
The group will take the form of an online discussion forum, with the occasional Skype meeting for deep discussion when needed. We hope to also arrange a meet up in person at least once a year. The aim is to work with the Student Reps from the Clubs Committee to gather students’ input on the BMC’s work as and when the BMC needs it, but also to feed ideas on areas we think need improving.
Issues the group may be looking at as it gets started include looking at guidance notes and their relevance/utility to student clubs and reviewing how the BMC’s training in supporting novices and training for committee members reflects student clubs’ needs. We hope that as time goes on the group can shape its own agenda as its members bring together fresh ideas from their experiences.
Keen? Then Get Involved
If this sounds interesting, we need volunteers with experience of running student clubs to be involved with the group. We’re keen to reach out to all kinds of clubs, so whether your club is big, small, mainly walks, climbs or boulders then we want to hear from you.
