The BMC Clubs’ Committee is looking for volunteers; one with specialist IT experience to support our work with online & social media engagement, another to represent National Clubs, and several others to represent clubs from local areas as existing members finish their term.
The Committee is one of several BMC specialist committees and it provides a forum for the discussion of all matters of concern to BMC affiliated clubs. It supports affiliated clubs by advising on specific issues, organising training events, producing general guidance on all aspects of club governance, and championing the cause for clubs.
Online & Social Media Engagement
We are seeking to co-opt a club member with IT and social media experience to progress online engagement with clubs. We are committed to improve the ways that the committee uses IT to improve the way that it works, how it interacts with clubs, and offers support and guidance to clubs. We therefore need someone who can drive this area forward. We anticipate this role being a short term position of one-year.
An understanding of clubs and the challenges that they face would be useful, as would experience of being a member of a club committee.
More information and an application form is available here for Word, and here for PDF
National Clubs Representative
In November there will be a vacancy for a National Clubs Rep on Clubs Comm. Therefore we are asking for members of national clubs to consider this opportunity and to make their club secretary / president / chairman aware that they wish to be considered for nomination. And we are asking for national clubs to start considering who they may wish to nominate for this position.
Each national club will be invited to nominate one person when the formal invitations are sent out in late August.
Nominees should have experience of club governance to join the BMC Clubs’ Committee [many reps have previously been club secretaries, treasurers or president/chairmen], although they don’t need to be a current member of their own club committee. Specific skills (such as legal, accounting, IT etc.) are useful but a willingness to contribute to meetings and to support projects is more important. The role is key for communicating issues from the national clubs through to Clubs Comm and for communicating support, advice and information back to the national clubs.
There are two positions on Clubs Comm for reps from national clubs - the successful volunteer will be working alongside the other rep who was appointed two years ago.
It is hoped that the successful volunteer will be available to attend the November Clubs Comm meeting, which will be held in Sheffield on the afternoon of Saturday 3rd November.
Local Area Clubs Representatives
There are vacancies for Local Area Clubs Reps on Clubs Comm to cover the following BMC Areas: North East; Lakes; North West; Cymru North Wales; and, London & South East.
Therefore we are asking club members to consider standing for one of these positions, and we’re asking clubs in those areas to consider encouraging their members to stand for one of the positions.
Elections for these positions usually take place at the BMC Area AGMs in November; however an Area could appoint someone to the role as an interim position. It is important that you either
contact your local Area Chair or Secretary prior to the Area meetings in September, or
contact your local Area Chair or Secretary prior to the Area AGMs in November, or
contact Jane Thompson or Fiona Sanders (details at the end of this article) who will introduce you to the local Area Chair
Volunteers should have some experience of club governance although they don’t need to be a current member of their own club committee. Specific skills (such as legal, accounting, IT etc.) are useful but a willingness to contribute to meetings and to support projects is more important. These roles are key for communicating issues from the clubs in the local BMC Areas through to the Clubs Committee and for communicating support, advice and information back to the local clubs.
What is the commitment?
Committee meetings are held four times a year; twice at the BMC offices in Manchester on Thursday evenings, and twice on a weekend for a longer meeting (usually in or near the mountainous areas of England and Wales). Video conferencing is available at most meetings for those members unable to attend in person. Travel expenses are reimbursed and food is provided at the meeting. For the weekend meetings overnight accommodation is provided.
Attendance at engagement sessions with clubs (such as Seminars or Roadshows) is occasionally requested.
Work takes place in-between meetings to further progress our objectives.
For the IT specialist role, please complete the short application form and return to Jane Thompson, BMC Clubs Officer, by noon on Tuesday 28th August 2018. Click here for the application form in Word, and here for the application form in PDF.
For the National Clubs Rep role – members should let their club secretary/president/chairman know of their interest by September. Clubs will be contacted in late August and formally invited to submit their nominations (deadline of Monday 1st October for receipt of nominations). Clubs will then be contacted with the details of the candidates and elections will take place with a closing date of Tuesday 23rd October.
For the Local Area Clubs Rep roles – members should let their local Area Chair or Secretary know of their interest either over the summer in preparation for the September meetings, or in time for the November Area AGMs.
