Alan Hinkes’ new book now in stock

Posted by Tony Ryan on 10/10/2013

Alan’s long-awaited book about his quest to climb the world’s 8,000-metre peaks is now available to buy from the BMC online shop.

8000 Metres – Climbing the World’s Highest Mountains tells the story of Alan’s 18-year odyssey to become the first Briton to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks; starting in 1987 with a new route on Shisha Pangma and culminating in 2005 on Kangchenjunga with an epic 26-hour summit bid.

A chapter is devoted to each of the 14 mountains, in the order in which Alan climbed them; each one lavishly illustrated by numerous photos, mostly taken by Alan, many using a self-timer whilst climbing solo. There are also chapters on some of the characters of Himalayan mountaineering Alan has encountered along the way, the challenges of high altitude photography and filming, dressing to survive, and dealing with death.

During 18 years and 27 expeditions to the Death Zone, there are bound to be many highs and lows, and as fellow Yorkshireman Brian Blessed says in the book’s foreword, Hinkes recounts them “with passion and simplicity, and his amazing photographs tell it all.”

Simone talks what it's like up there, and why his wife's dream will keep him off K2, the only one of the world's fourteen 8000m peaks that still hasn't been climbed in winter.

As a fellow Yorkshire guy I have been fortunate to spend 2hrs in the company of Al. He is a typical Yorkshire man, honest and straight to the point. Can't wait to obtain a copy of his book with the fantastic photographs taken over many years of extreme climbing Cheers Kate
