Ty Newydd Crag: access suspended

Concerns climbing may be adversely affecting the rearing of pheasants below the crag have prompted the owners to ask that climbers do not climb at this North East Wales sports climbing venue between 1 October and 31 January.

Ty Newydd is one of the better quality sports climbing venues along the A55 corridor in North Wales. However the crag lies entirely on enclosed private land and access is highly sensitive. The landowner has been very supportive of climbing here and a lot of work has been put in to negotiate the access agreement here.

The small valley that contains the crag is also used by a local shooting syndicate that rear pheasants and this provides a major source of income for the farm. In recent weeks it has become apparent that climbers using the crag have been inadvertently disturbing the birds, especially in the early evening when the birds need to return to the pens for roosting.

Following further negotiations the landowner is still happy for climbing to continue here but subject to a seasonal restriction with no climbing allowed between 1st October  and 31st January.

Please ensure that this restriction is adhered to otherwise access to the whole site could be banned. Signs with the updated access information will be placed on the approach path in the next few days.

As always keep up to date with the most recent access news by checking the BMC Regional Access Database.
