Support the Lighter Later campaign

Posted by Tina Gardner on 17/01/2012

Ever wish the evenings would stay lighter so you could climb and walk outdoors for longer? As the Daylight Saving Bill approaches its third reading on 20 January 2012, you can support the Lighter Later campaign.

If the BIll is passed, it is likely to gain Royal Assent and the Government will be committed to researching the effect of aligning our waking hours to the hours of daylight by shifting the clocks forward by one hour throughout the year.

The change would have clear potential benefits for sport and recreation, especially in the winter, by extending the opportunity for more activity in the evening. It is thought an extra hour of daylight in the afternoon and evening is equivalent to a 20% increase in after work/school capacity of community clubs.  According to recent research, it would also save in the region of 450,000 tonnes of carbon a year.

Over 100 MPs debated and voted in favour of the Bill at the second reading. At the forthcoming third reading on 20 January a majority vote is required and at least 100 MPs must be present for the Bill to pass.

Tim Lamb, CEO Sport & Recreation Alliance says: “This is a tremendous opportunity to do something to really promote outdoor sport and recreation. Please help us to win the day by actively supporting this campaign. Together we can change time!”

We never want evenings to stay longer. There would be no time for night outing. Almost everything will be closed before the nightfall. Sometimes we may have to sleep immediately after the sunset which is too much.

why alter the clocks at all, it's a ridiculous concept. The amount of daylight hours only change in length due to the time of year not because we change the clocks. Get up earlier in the summer to make best use of the available daylight like farmers do and leave the clocks alone.
