A BMC TV commissioned film by Jen Randall has just won the Channel 4-sponsored Best Short Film prize at Kendal Mountain Festival. We talked to Jen Randall, currently on cloud nine, to find out more.

One of five BMC TV supported films selected to screen over the weekend, ‘Where Walking Took Me' takes just a few beautifully-paced minutes to describe a thirty-year relationship between father and daughter, adventure and inspiration.

Walking around Britain with her Dad got Jen into outdoor adventures. Filming those adventures has become her career and Jen is now deservedly an award-winning adventure filmmaker! Katie Moore, Director of the Chamonix Adventure Festival and member of the Judging Panel at KMF explained:

“Aside from the wonderful photography and creative editing, we all felt the film summed up exactly what experiencing the outdoors and Kendal Festival is all about. Jen managed to tell a complete story in a very short time, which takes you on a journey. The simplicity of the idea – a father taking his daughter walking – resonates with everyone.’

Sounds like resounding praise for both Jen and walking! We hotlined Jen to find out how she’s doing up on cloud nine:

Tell me about the walk that’s depicted in the film?
The walk in the film is a chain walk near Elie in Fife. It was one of the first adventures I went on with my dad, and when the tide is up it’s still pretty exciting! We only did it once together, many, many years ago, but I have always had fond memories of it. It was a treat to go back.

How did you come to make the film?
I made the film after Alex Messenger at BMC TV got in touch and asked me for some ideas for walking films. I came up with a few ideas and he commissioned this one, along with a couple of others. Originally it was meant to be me and Dad walking in the hills, but I was working on another hill-walking film so thought it would be nice to move location to something different. My husband, Alex Gorham, was on camera, so a huge part of this is thanks to him!

What's cool about winning an award at KMF with a BMC TV movie?
It's great to win this prize in the first place, to get that nod of encouragement that says 'you're doing well, keep going'. But it's great to win with a BMC TV film because they have been so supportive, allowed me to be creative, and commissioned the film in the first place.

Where will walking take you next?
Walking will actually next take me on another BMC TV adventure. After then, who knows!
