Jane Godfrey and Alison Williams attended the rock climbing meet of the Federation of the Bulgarian Alpine Clubs (BAC) from 20-24 September 2006 in Vratsa, Bulgaria, on behalf of the BMC.
They reported:
“The climbing in Vratsa is just outside the town and is all amazing limestone rock. All the climbing areas are easily accessible. Across from the hotel there are a number of areas with a range of multi pitch climbs. We climbed two of the classic climbs – Bezenghi 160m (Grade 5) and Akademic 160m (Grade 6) both bolted and 5 superb pitches. – followed by a number of abseils to descend. There is also an area called Central wall, which is a sheer face of about 450m with many routes on.
“We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and were looked after very well. It was great to meet climbers from another country. The Bulgarian climbing community appears to be a small one with some very experienced people and some with amazing climbing capability. We both returned very inspired”
Jane and Alison applied for the two places on the meet allocated to the BMC by BAC. The added bonus was that their hotel room had a balcony overlooking the crag!
